Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jun 09, 2009 3:12 pm Hi all, Can anyone recommend a pool tiler in melbourne? I am looking to get my waterline tiles redone and would appreciate any good leads and suggestions. I have had a quote from a 'big' pool company of $1400 to remove the old tiles, $2800 to set the new tiles (200mmX200mm) and $600 for the tiles. For 30 linear meters of tiling nearly $5000 seems excessive..... Any thoughts? Thanks Al Re: Pool tiling in melbourne... 2Jun 09, 2009 5:11 pm What is the remainder of the internal finish made from? what type of pre existing water line tiles do you have? what type of coping do you currently have? is the pool full or empty? My best guess it was done 10-15 years ago. Current waterline tiles are not too bad condition (look more like a bathroom tile than a mosaic tile) but the coping was replaced at some stage and there is a 30-40mm gap from the bullnose coping (looks like a terracotta paver) to the top of the waterline tile. I can either 'cover' this gap and acid wash/clean the existing tiles if possilble, or was planning to replace the existing tiles with 200mmx200mm mosaic is price is reasonable, also tile the steps x3 and that's where a lot of the wear is currently due to high traffic I assume, and repaint the surface with an epoxy. (luxapool or similar) The pool is currently full. Re: Pool tiling in melbourne... 4Jun 09, 2009 7:48 pm the grout gap is to big. max gap should be 6 mm the flaking or wearing internal paint cannot be patched the entire pool internal needs relining (patching is exactly that) pool tilling is not the same as normal tilling Optima adhesive which is what i use is around $120 a 30kg kit, the sub base ie: cement render for a flat surface when re tiling will most probably need to be replaced, again patching is patching the price of the tiles you have been given is quite reasonable for an entry level tile app. $20 a l/m ($600 for tiles) the removal of the tiles and price quoted would include the labour, buisness associated costs and dumpage of old tiles so again the price is reasonable Labour wise would include actual man hours, business costs, fuel, buisness tax etc for a reputable business the average day cost for pool refurb etc is around $1500 a day just in running costs so in saying that yes $5000 is alot of money but for a quality job the price appears to be reasonable. Tiling or rendering is something I cant justify price wise on the entire pool. ($13k+ for Qpebble or Qquartz) The next option is repainting for $1500-2000. Am happy to get 5-7 years out of it I know it will not last forever but even if I have to repaint it twice in 10 years i would rather do that and have a 10k boat in the garage! Just my opinion.... The gap in the tiles is not grout from the coping. It is concrete. It is probably the remainder of another coping the previous owners had. The tiles themselves are not bad but that gap doesnt look great. Thats why my other option was to hide this 'gap' with some sort of facade,or Is it not possible to tile straight over the top of the existing tiles rather then removing them? My friend just had his pool waterline tiles redone for a little over $3000, same tiles, the area was actually larger. This is why i question the costs involved. If the pool was leaking that 22k probably included fixing it as well, and then the vinyl liner. Think vinyl liners are about 5-8k depending on sizes + install. Personally I dont like the look myself...looks a bit 'above groundish'. lol if I could get a 'new' pool for 22k I'd take 3 I reakon!! They are in Glen Waverley and I think they would have had to fix the leak. It seemed to take a while up to 5 of them there for about 3 weeks. They are always telling me they have got no money, don't know where the pool money materialised from.
