Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 May 11, 2009 12:10 pm We will be moving into our next house in a few weeks. I am still in the daydreaming phase lol and planning the garden in my head at the moment. Was talking to our neighbour about decking as I would love to have a large decked are out the front. The ground is sloped so I thought this would be the best option. I have never had decking before. My nighbour said it looks great for about a year and then looks crap... Is this true? Is there much maintenance in keeping it looking good? Re: To deck or not to deck 2May 11, 2009 12:28 pm I think you should def get a deck. My friend build her deck about two years ago, and it still looks good. I think all you need is to revarnish it every year. Then it comes up all nice and new again. Hubby and I are considering this stuff... http://www.modwood.com.au/ Re: To deck or not to deck 4May 11, 2009 9:47 pm We built a deck in 1987 (or was it 88?), and we're the laziest people in the world, so maintenance was virtually zero. It still looked great when we sold in 2007. Staining or oiling is easy to do, to brighten it up if it needs it down the track - you just use a roller or lambswool pad on a long pole and it takes no time at all. Your best bet is to give it a protective treatment when new - we used Ultradeck on our new decked portico. (that's it below) http://www.intergrain.com.au/ultradeck.html - Then if you re-do it once a year or so, it'll always look good. It is however the most expensive product on the market as for memory a 4 litre can was around $160.00 Ben LEADING THE WAY IN BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION BUILDERSEDGE PTY LTD Re: To deck or not to deck 6May 12, 2009 9:17 pm honestly I don't like decks. They look dirty very easily and the stain doesn't look good for very long. I clean mine quite often and it looks good until the first person comes to the door and then its just looks dirty. I think some sort of paving or stone looks alot better and is far more practical. I wouldn't use decking again but thats just my opinion. The Cetol Deck was deigned for softwood and should have a basecoat of HLS applied first if using on hardwood. I've used HLS many times and it stands the test as Ben said. A mate used Cetol Deck on his treated pine deck and it lasted 6 years before recoating, that being said it was all under cover. However it wasn't always this way it was only after a certain product we used on it can' t remember what it's called!! And it now seems to have too much varnish on it causing dust to sit on top. I want to strip it back and start again. Any recommendations on what products to use?
