Browse Forums Outdoor Living Re: DECKING MATERIAL CHOICES 21Jan 03, 2008 11:47 pm im a fan of grooves up too. Ours was layed this way. Only new tho, so see how things pan out Re: DECKING MATERIAL CHOICES 23Jan 08, 2008 6:04 pm We've been quoted $300 a square metre for a merbau deck, (about 40-50cm off the ground) all inclusive - materials and labour. Handrails are extra but we don't need them.
Does this seem a good price, and is merbau an ok timber to use? Eimaj Re: DECKING MATERIAL CHOICES 24Jan 08, 2008 7:43 pm Merbau is a good durability 1 (best) hardwood. Its best used close to the ground as it is tannin heavy and leaches badly. You can put a tinted finish on it to darken/brown the colour up a bit.
The decking is about $42 sq. metre to buy. $300sq. metre sounds exspensive but hard to say without seeing the quote or site. Eimaj I would say that is excessive to say the least. 1 square metre of decking is about $50-60, there is no way bearers, joists, concrete and abour is $250. Check my post Here for details on how to price the deck. Adrian B Re: DECKING MATERIAL CHOICES 28Jan 09, 2008 11:01 am rellie We paid $142 sqm for 140mm merbau. Photos are on our blog. Thanks for the info Adrian, Luke and Rellie. Rellie, your decking looks great. Who did you get it done by? Could you PM the details. Half the price of our quote!!! Adrian B Re: DECKING MATERIAL CHOICES 30Jan 09, 2008 12:31 pm bec is some splitting between the end nail and end of (several) planks considered acceptable in a deck after one year? (deck in hot sun) What type of decking is it? The ends should have been pre-drilled to avoid this. Re: DECKING MATERIAL CHOICES 31Jan 09, 2008 12:36 pm eimaj Could you PM the details. Eimaj What are the dimensions of the deck you are planning? Adrian - I worked it out as about 6m x 4m (24 square metres). Basic rectangle shape. Eimaj Re: DECKING MATERIAL CHOICES 36Jan 19, 2008 11:34 pm I have just come across this thread and was interested to see merbau as class 1 for decking. We were thinking of putting down Batu decking but I understand it is Class 2 rating (not as good).
Our builder 'forgot' to pour the slab for our terrace when he was laying the foundation and has agreed to pay for decking instead. Just wondering if we are getting a good deal. He said the terrace slab would have cost us about $1600. so he will either refund the money or pay for decking. Luke can you give us an idea what the costs might be for materials + installation (if possible) for a deck approximate size 5 x 5.5 in merbau and/or batu? We were thinking around the 4k figure??? Batu, as a durabilty 2 timber is fine for outdoors.
Its hard to give an estimate without knowing the specific site details but materials would be around that ballpark $80 sq. metre. MOst builders charge around $250-$300/ hour Re: DECKING MATERIAL CHOICES 38Jan 20, 2008 8:34 pm Dukekamaya Any outdoor timber must be class 1 or 2 durabilty otherwise pressure preservative teated. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10974 Different to what others have said but thanks for that insight. 2 5206 Not recommended! The image presented is for a sublevel area.
