Browse Forums Outdoor Living Re: Anyone have chooks? 3Mar 26, 2009 8:47 pm I'm aware you can't have roosters in residential areas and the boundary fencing cannot form part of the enclosure - thats about it Re: Anyone have chooks? 4Mar 26, 2009 9:09 pm the regulations will vary from council to council - as far as I know we are allowed to have roosters here. Usually a limit on how many you can chooks you can have too - which I blithely ignored for all the many years I had chooks in my old house Our boundary fencing formed part of the enclosure, didn't know you weren't supposed to - actually many people do that here (including our former neighbour, our chook runs backed onto each other) We had a very large back yard and had an enclosure with an old rainwater tank with front cut out for their roosting house. You need to put straw on the floor of the roosting area. We didn't have a rooster - you get just as many eggs without one and many people prefer unfertilised eggs. Roosters just make a lot of noise but don't actually increase production (bit like males in general ) We usually bought hens at point of lay and we fed them a mixture of laying pellets and household scraps, they eat anything. Our numbers varied but usually had about 12 chooks at a time and in peak production time (spring -summer) we were getting almost a dozen eggs a day. They stop laying over the winter, from soon after Easter until early August. This may vary depending on your climate. We were told you could get egg production happening all year, albeit at reduced production level, if you feed them warm cooked mash.(make a 'porridge' from the cooked laying pellets) We never bothered trying this out though. can't think of anything else to tell you about chickens but if you are really serious, there is always this forum: http://forum.backyardpoultry.com/ Yes an entire forum dedicated to poultry raising!!!! Re: Anyone have chooks? 5Mar 26, 2009 9:55 pm I've been telling Dh I want chooks at the new house. he's not too keen. he's scared of them..But despite that he's bought me 2 gardening/organic magazines since christmas with articles about backyard chooks and chook pens awwwww... I would love some chooks and have room for them but don't want rats and mice also! Re: Anyone have chooks? 14Apr 02, 2009 8:57 pm Well, you don't have the chicken run too close to the house The mice are attracted to the chicken feed rather than the actual birds, you do have to keep your dry food in a secure container, not the hessain bags it comes in - mice will eat thru them. We used to keep ours in standard garbage bins with secure lids - one-off cost from hardware store. And don't overfeed the chooks so there is not excess feed ****** around- ie feed them no more than what they will eat on a daily basis. Did not have problem with mice just by doing the above Re: Anyone have chooks? 15Apr 04, 2009 12:47 pm From WA Dept of Agriculture Keeping chickens in the backyard... http://www.agric.wa.gov.au/content/AAP/ ... 04_022.PDF Re: Anyone have chooks? 16Apr 12, 2009 9:24 pm we are hoping to have some chooks too. probably only about 4 or 6 though.
