Browse Forums Outdoor Living Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 21Dec 04, 2009 9:11 am Sharing my recent experience. I have gone to Stratco and inquired about a verandah we wish to constuct. Its a 3.2m L x 2.3m W colourbond gable with a 6.7m L x 4.5m W flat roof connected to each other. The only real addition is 2 skylights in the gable. Cost is $3,200 for the gable and $4,300 with the flat installed by myself. As you can see at $7,500 it isn't cheap but we are hoping that with January's lull period would should get some decent discounting from Stratco. I hope to also use the buying power of a fence to bring the price down. When January comes around, if we don't get the anticipated discounts then I will most likely opt for timber. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 22Dec 04, 2009 10:00 am I suppose the choice will also depend on what kind of pergola flooring is one having. Eg., a decking floor goes better with timber pergola. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: 23Dec 04, 2009 10:06 am Fu Manchu Our colour bond posts are rusting all over after 5 years. The next one will be timber. what should be the lifespan of colorbond??? progress viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20401 sculptures viewtopic.php?f=36&t=26607 pole trouble viewtopic.php?f=3&t=25988 Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 24Dec 04, 2009 1:56 pm ??? It would depend on location. Here in coastal WA with very alkaline soils and extreme trade winds laden with salt, I hate to think. All my patios we are planning will have timber posts and maybe steel beams for length. although right now they are all steel, with some rust One feature of colour bond I hate is the oxidisation of the coatings. Areas where the run off hits the paving or concrete will get that white residue after a few years. colourbond though doesn't need painting straight off the bat which is one less job required in construction. I recon you would be fine to choose it. I find timber much easier to work with but harder to join then steel which goes together with tec screws and angle brackets Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 29Dec 05, 2009 3:32 pm seeking solutions Fu Manchu Oh and the existing colourbond patio is only 4 years old and it has rust. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 30Mar 02, 2011 11:58 am "Steel is dearer but its maintanance free" Is this true?? Timber is our first choice, but we've been told that timber was more expensive... We have a large 13 x 8 metre area to cover, and have been asking around for people's preference (as far as versatility & maintenance) and cost. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 31Mar 12, 2011 11:23 pm Timber with polycarbonate flat sloping roof, 8x4, just over 10.5k. Includes everything (except maybe finalising stormwater disposal). Another timber quote, gable roof, around 6k. Aluminium, same size but gable roof spanning over 8m, just over 9.5k, guy says council application is no longer required My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Hi I am wanting some opinions about the build of a steel shed I am going to get one about 4.5 x 2.5 m steel shed and the height will be about 2.3-2.4m high The one I am… 0 14389 This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 4806 brokers will also be in a position to get you a better rate than the advertised rate most times. 6 7534 |
