Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Mar 15, 2009 1:30 pm We are looking at putting a pergola off the side of our house to have as an undercover entertaining area, probably about 6m x 4mwith concrete or tiled surface underneath. We also have a small alfresco which is under the roof line, but we want to create a larger entertaining area.
I am leaning towards steel construction but what are peoples experiences with whether timber or steel construction is better? cheaper? pro's and cons? Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 2Mar 15, 2009 2:53 pm Steel is dearer but its maintanance free. Timber will require a lick of paint every 8-10 years. Other than that it may come done simply to the look or the style of your house. It is costing us 11,500 installed (plus 500 freight because we live in a country area) for a pergola aprox. 6m x 11m. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 5Mar 15, 2009 4:43 pm Thanks Helyn. That price sounds good for 11m x 6m. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 6Mar 15, 2009 5:04 pm I built a timber one for a friend not long ago - 8.5 metres x 4.8 metres with Colorbond/Laserlite roof - total cost $2200.......
Shows you the difference between steel and timber Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 8Mar 15, 2009 5:30 pm My mate who is a sparkie built a timber pergola, not sure of dimensions (Big- probably 18m x 9m) but it cost him about $9K, just in materials as he did it all himself Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 9Mar 15, 2009 6:42 pm Our colour bond posts are rusting all over after 5 years.
The next one will be timber. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 10Mar 15, 2009 6:46 pm Sorry I should have specified that was for materials, the labour was for love
Still the materials are about double for a Colorbond steel versus timber Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 11Mar 15, 2009 7:04 pm We had a colourbond pergola at our last place, It was 7m by 4m. It had a gable roof with skylights too. Looked fantastic, and when we moved out 7 years later still looked brand new. So based on that i would reccomend the colourbond . Oh and back then it cost us a fair bit....bout $9000 Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 12Mar 16, 2009 4:56 pm I am having a steel c section + colourbond roof with half dozen sheets of laser lite pergola built, gable, attached to facia on one side with roof rafter brackets, and 4 x 90 mm square steel poles on the other side. size is 11.3 m x 5.5m
$7200 in materials and approx $3000-3500 in installation and council costs. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 13Mar 18, 2009 1:10 am we built a timber pergola a few years ago and i love it, i much prefer the look of timber to steel . But i would say the exception would be if you have a colourbond roof on your house in which case a colourbond pergola will look like an extension of the house instead of an add on. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 15Mar 18, 2009 5:02 pm I have gone to a local shed and pergola place and I am waiting for a quote...so will see.
This place has double sided colorbond so the roof would be colorbond wit ha high gloss finsih on the underside which looks pretty good in the photos. Only problem is you have to have the same color on both sides. Our house roof is Monument which is a very dark grey/ charcoal color, this would look no good on the underside of the pergola so I was thinking we would do the whole pergola in a Paperbark color to match our windows, fascia etc. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 16Mar 18, 2009 5:12 pm We have been quoted $8000 for a 12m x 4m timber pergola from Pergolas R Us. That includes all permits, construction and connection to storm water. Not sure if they cover your area but worth a call if they do. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 17Mar 18, 2009 6:29 pm we just had to quote for a steel one 9mx3m and they both came in around $5,000 not including council or concrete as we have existing concrete. Its also to go on the back on exsiting garage so they were going to re use the gutter and downpipe.I am now going to look at timber as I have a carpenter that will work for around $25-30 hour , so I am going to get a quote for timber finished building 40 square home on 5 acres with perry homes.working on the landscaping just finished pool deck with ://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2217 Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 18Dec 03, 2009 2:50 pm Got a quote recently from install-a-verandah for a 8m X 6m flat colorbond roof - $10K including installation and permit (15-year structural guarantee and a 10-year workmanship guarantee). Am wondering if the price of 10K is on the higher side for this patio and would like to get a couple of more quotes - are there other installers in melbourne whom I can contact for quotes ? Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 19Dec 03, 2009 9:27 pm We just had a 12m x 4m patio roof built with a gable in the middle, it is a Fielders Centenary. Re: steel or timber pergola...what's better? 20Dec 03, 2009 10:54 pm It is pretty hard to pigeon hole a patio into what it should and shouldn't cost. I love the look of timber, and when it is stained it looks fantastic. The finish can be great or really average depending on who does it and what you pay. Steel seems practical and much stronger in some cases where long beams are required. You may not need so many posts.
