Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Feb 17, 2009 10:32 pm Went round to check out the building progress on the weekend.
Noticed that when we stood in our alfresco area the next door neighbours refrigerated cooling system sounded very noisy. It is about 1.5m off the colobond fence on their side and about 5 mts from our alfesco. What could I do to reduce the noise. If I put some bamboo or bush type screen my side of the fence would this muffle the sound abit. Or has anyone got any ideas Other than going around and turning it off Think it is going to be abit anoying in the summer having to listen to that all the time. They have noise limits on air conditioners, and are very happy to enforce them...
I had a problem with the neighbours... It was more than twice the legal sound output well inside my place... Council came around twice after I contacted the real estate agent(it was a rental, and they didn't action my suggested maintanance request!) Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... Its one of those tin colobond fences so I think the sound is bouncing off it. I dont know if it sounds noisy because its a refridgerated one thats ground level just outside their laundry. I have only lived next to to people that have evaporated coolers on the roof before so I dont know what the norm is with these models. This one sounds a lot noisier than those type. I'd talk to the neighbour first before council, that way you won't get off on the wrong foot. Then, if they don't do anything - report to council. Re: Neighbours noisy air conditioner 8Mar 05, 2009 7:45 pm Yep thanks,
The neighbours are lovely I dont want t get on the wrong side of them as I think they will be great neighbours to have. I will see what happens when I move in by next summer, maybe I will be in the alfresco having a few wines and I will be noiser than the air con I just thought if I maybe put a bamboo screen my side of the fence that may muffle the sound a bit. Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Neighbours noisy air conditioner 9Apr 18, 2009 12:44 pm definitly talk to your neighbours first, i'm sure you can find a better soultion than going to the council, I work in Air-conditioning, if you go to the council, they will almost certinly get them to move it & you are talking big $$$ and a seriously ** of neighbour. how old is it? is it a million years old? maybe they will consider a newer one? the new models are much much quieter and more energy efficient? cost to move old one's location $1500 - $3000 cost to replace (unit only - use same duct etc) $5000-$6000 + much better energy use hope this helps Will - Re: Neighbours noisy air conditioner 10Apr 27, 2009 8:54 pm If the area between the house and fence is narrow, then there will be some "bouncing" off the metal fence, giving an amplified effect. Brick walls and concrete paths add to the effect, lots of hard surfaces for the sound to echo off. We had the same problem with neighbours at the place we were renting, except it was their late-night conversations that were the issue. I'm not sure that doing anything to your side of the fence will help much - but perhaps something along the neighbours' side might? Some plantings, or some sort of softer material (timber, brushwood...?) that will absorb some of the noise. Since they're such nice people, I'm sure they'd be willing to try something to resolve the problem. Re: Neighbours noisy air conditioner 11May 12, 2009 2:41 am Talk to your neighbor about your problem. Ask them if they are comfortable with the aircon with cracking noise? Could they have sound sleep during nights? Then suggest best brand, green-friendly and cost-effective airconditioned unit. If they are really nice they will consider your suggestion. Re: Neighbours noisy air conditioner 13Feb 11, 2010 10:04 pm Ok this is an old thread but I can say for sure that brushwood or plantings will have no, repeat NO effect whatsoever on reducing the noise (I once worked in noise policing job). If air can get through the barrier so will the noise. Extend the height of the fence is the easiest option.
