Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jan 26, 2009 11:01 am Hi just a few questions to ask Im going to have a small courtyard deck built. The measurements are 4.600 width 2.500 length. sitting just below the weep holes. The cost in materials quoted by Mitre 10 are $ 1136.00. Is this reasonable for this size deck?
Does anyone know the price of merbau decking these days? Mitre 10 selling merbau 90s for $5.60 Has anyone recently been able to buy it cheaper? if so where? How much approx would the labour be you think? ADDED ABIT MORE INFO SINCE 1ST POST. Re: cost of merbau 4Jan 26, 2009 2:13 pm We just decked our portico and we rang around for prices on decking timber. We were planning to use merbau, but it turned out to be cheaper for us to buy spotted gum than imported timbers, I assume because of the lousy exchange rates.
The spotted gum looks sensational, and we're glad we used it. So maybe you might want to look at a few different timber options and see what's more economical. Re: cost of merbau 7Jan 26, 2009 5:56 pm Merbau is becoming more expensive and and the availability is slowly starting to diminish which is why a lot of timber yards are starting to stock more cheaper alternatives.
From memory the last lot of merbau decking I bought in 90mm was about $4 per lm but I will check to see exactly what I payed because the prices you have been mentioning sounds very expensive. Re: cost of merbau 8Jan 26, 2009 8:01 pm Merbau is more exspensive because it is bought in US dollars, not because there isn't any.
Buy aussie hardwoods, not strip-forested rainforest timbers Re: cost of merbau 11Jan 27, 2009 7:09 am Ironbark is a good alternative - its durability 1 like merbau.
We sell 86mmx19mm for $4.45 per lineal metre Re: cost of merbau 12Jan 27, 2009 4:58 pm Is there much Kwila around these days? and how much is it?
I got mine for about $3.50 a metre (90mm) about 5 years ago and it is leaps and bounds better than merbau but i dont hear many people using it. I assume its either gone up alot or theres none left. Re: cost of merbau 14Jan 27, 2009 6:28 pm Merbau and Kwila are the same timber - its called different names in different countries Re: cost of merbau 15Mar 07, 2009 8:17 pm isn't the price affected this time of year because of availability, i.e. harvesting slows because of the south east asian monsoon? ’’Quondo Omni Flunkus Mortati ’’ If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. I was getting a quote for gates n screens at Mitre 10 in Pakky on the weekend. Merabu has actually come down in price $5.25 originally $ 5.60 for 90s. Not a lot but at least you can save a few dollars. Re: cost of merbau 19Mar 10, 2009 6:44 pm It has come down a bit in the last few weeks - I still stand by the previous post though, buy sustainable Aussie hardwood Re: cost of merbau 20Mar 10, 2009 7:23 pm Thanks duke havent done anything about the deck yet dragging my feet What do you think is the reason for the price decrease of Merabu? lower petrol prices?
How much further do you think the price will drop? Rather like Tams stencil deck version in another thread .might look into that for the Courtyard and Alfresco areas. 7 12076 We were lucky in that our old house was so small (86 square metres) compared to the new house, they were able to take enough readings around the old backyard house before… 8 37356 Fair Trading can issue orders to rectify and complete but once the matter goes to NCAT these orders are automatically vacated.
