Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Jan 01, 2009 11:28 pm Good evening,
I would like to request some advise regarding my upcoming decking project. We are about to receive the keys of our new home and the first job is a large deck at the back measuring 15m x 4m ( with a center section that is 5mX5m ) at 260mm off ground level. We are intending to use 87mm x 19mm jarrah decking. We would be most appreciative of any advice regarding suggested materials quantities and any advise for the “young player”. Cheers. Re: Decking advice for the "young player" 2Jan 02, 2009 11:11 am 60 square meters is a big deck for a beginner, but the upside is you'll save a lot of money when DIY,even if you have to buy the tools to do the job.
Get a copy of this book, with regards to designing & building a deck it'll be the best money you'll ever spend. I think that Bunnings stock it as well : http://www.seekbooks.com.au/book/Austra ... 217106.htm Also, over at the Woodwork Forums check out this excellent WIP thread from Raff when he built his deck. You'll find a lot of good info in the parent forum as well : http://www.*.com/showthread.php?t=73294 (A note for the mods, I'm not sure about the policy here of linking to other forums from this one, please edit if required) Cheers, Justin. Re: Decking advice for the "young player" 3Jan 02, 2009 1:34 pm Definetly get that book. From memory it's by Alan Staines who has put together a lot of DIY books... It's excellent for construction methods and framing size tables...
Also ask heaps of question on the forum, take photo's and put up sketches... A sketch makes it much easy to understand sometimes! Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Decking advice for the "young player" 4Jan 02, 2009 6:20 pm 260mm doesn't give you too much room for bearers and joists etc. The building code specifies a minimum of 300mm for decks but you shouldn't have any dramas.
You will probably need to use smaller end sectin framing which just means a few more supports Re: Decking advice for the "young player" 5Jan 07, 2009 11:21 pm Hi, thanks for your replies. We found the decking book in bunnings, which has been a great help. Another question, What size bearers would we need if the stirrups/posts were set at 1m apart? the joists will be 90 x 45 . Thanks again
Brad Re: Decking advice for the "young player" 6Jan 08, 2009 6:10 pm You really don't need to posts/stirrups that close. The smallest size bearer is 90mmx70mm and will span around 1600mm comfortably. Your 90mmx45mm joists will span around 1600mm also. Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck? Thanks 0 10971 Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil. It will look 10 years younger and add value to your home.
