Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Nov 01, 2008 10:00 am Hi guys,
can anyone tell me if in NSW it is now a legal requirement that outdoor tiles ( alfresco & balconies) must have some kind of safety rating, called an R rating? I have been advised by my tiler that I cannot have the same tiles outside as I have for the inside of the house. The outdoor tiles must have a rough texture to them. EDIT : I just read that subject title. Ooo, that's going to get some comments..can't wait to hear them tdl .... Never heard of it but it does make some sort of sense, I will be interested in all your replies as we will have tiles in our Alfresco area. We now have a blog. http://allaboutthebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: R-rated outdoor tiling 8Nov 05, 2008 7:18 pm danma I must be slow didn't even think of that. Maybe I have just got too old..... And I didn't think of it either danma, as I was typing the thread title Guess I must be getting old as well Re: R-rated outdoor tiling 9Nov 05, 2008 8:06 pm I would imagine that it would have to do with wear from outside elements, and slipperyness.
Maybe a thin rubber coating might protect you from unexpected incidents?????????????????? Or you can just practice abstinance - from using the tiled area of course..... Adrian B Re: R-rated outdoor tiling 11Nov 05, 2008 9:45 pm There is an outside version of our indoor tiles. The outside version has some kind of coating on it which gives grippage. However, it's a !@#$%^ pain to clean ! I hate it !
I'd like ot know whether : 1. outdoor tiles are rated according to safety and 2. whether we're required by law to have them outside ? Re: R-rated outdoor tiling 12Nov 06, 2008 6:46 pm outdoor tiles are rated for slippage
if a builder installs tiles that are not rated then the house wont pass inspection if your independent tiller installs non rated tiles then he deserves to be sued when you slip over why risk safety to save a few dollars or to not get the exact match to your interior tiles, exterior tiles are designed to be exterior, same as natural stone tiles, man made pavers etc to reduce the risk of slippage why not look at a total contrast to your interior tiles or decking etc Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: R-rated outdoor tiling 13Nov 06, 2008 7:33 pm davinci outdoor tiles are rated for slippage if a builder installs tiles that are not rated then the house wont pass inspection if your independent tiller installs non rated tiles then he deserves to be sued when you slip over why risk safety to save a few dollars or to not get the exact match to your interior tiles, exterior tiles are designed to be exterior, same as natural stone tiles, man made pavers etc to reduce the risk of slippage why not look at a total contrast to your interior tiles or decking etc Might just do that ! I really don't understand why there's such a fuss regarding outdoor tiles. If people are installing polished porcelains in their everyday living areas, which is just as dangerous if not more so, then why not glazed prorcelains outside ?? Re: R-rated outdoor tiling 16Nov 07, 2008 7:35 am Southies Maybe not, but A) the alfresco area is undercover & B) pol porcelain tiles do get wet, particularly when washed. And from 1st hand experience, they are !@#$%^ dangerous when wet I have polished porcelain and they are not slippery at all. I do remember Ash once calling me a gekko Paula Re: R-rated outdoor tiling 18Nov 11, 2008 11:28 am I have found quite a few tiles that are indoor, then you have the out door equivalent to that tile. Slip resistant. You will never get a non slip tile.
By the way I found your post and thought it would be a little more interesting! Slip resistant. You will never get a non slip tile. Michelle the problem is that the outdoor version of the tile I have selected for our living areas, is an absolute bugger to clean. It has something applied to it , which you can't see, but can feel. This is what provides the grip. But I've dirtied it, scuffed it.....to see if it can be cleaned and it needs quite a lot of scrubbing. Even then, it's not perfectly clean ! I mean.... I'm by no means anal about cleaning. But I'm just envisioning hard-to-remove food stains, bird poo, oil, etc....accumulating over years of use. A most unattractive prospect. Who designs these tiles?? Obviously not the gender who has to clean them. Grrrrr Quote: By the way I found your post and thought it would be a little more interesting You and a few others, I imagine Re: R-rated outdoor tiling 20Nov 11, 2008 11:49 am Southies  Paula, I hate them ! I have slipped on several occasions and my adult son has fallen, not knowing that I had just washed the floor. I really don't know how they have been allowed in homes ? Oh no!! I had mine sealed and I wonder if that helps?? Although the cat fell in the bath once and did a 2 minute skid in the one spot from wet paws Paula Thanks for letting us know.
