Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Oct 30, 2008 9:18 pm Hoping this site may offer an avenue for assistance. Am planning a gable roof pergola to attach to the fascia on one side of the house. If I use the usual method of securing the gable rafter to the fascia, when I cut out around the guttering, I am left with minimal timber on the rafter. I have had the suggestion of making up a metal bracket to bolt to the under side of the rafter and is then secured to the fascia. While spending hours ppouring over the net for hints etc, I have come across a number of pics which show a new fascia running along the front of the guttering, and the rafters are attached to this. The only problem is .....I cannot find a way of securing the new fascia to the existing. I have looked at the Pryda extenda-bracket, but this is for going up over the roofline.
Hopefully your expertise will be able to offer some suggestions. Many thanks. Re: Pergola roof attachment 2Oct 30, 2008 10:43 pm I'll try get some pics of some the ones I have done.
Just a bit confused about your description so hope the pics will help Re: Pergola roof attachment 3Oct 31, 2008 8:00 am If you have eaves, I would go with the extanda bracket, so the weight sits on top of the wall plate. If you don't have eaves, use a rafter strengthening bracket. You can see these, image 5, page 5 on this doc:

Re: Pergola roof attachment 4Oct 31, 2008 5:43 pm Fu Manchu, thank you. I wouldn't mind seeing some pics as they may give me some other options. That would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks. Re: Pergola roof attachment 5Oct 31, 2008 5:45 pm Thank you Zaff. That is extremely helpful. Will check out Bunnings tomorrow as obviously cost will also be a major consideration. Greatly appreciate your input.
Kindest regards....... Re: Pergola roof attachment 6Nov 06, 2008 6:52 pm There are talks of banning the method of hanging rafters etc. off fascia board as the fascia alone is not a structual timber and has failed in some instances. Re: Pergola roof attachment 7Mar 15, 2011 3:41 pm I know this post is two years old, but this is still true: Stratco still do sell the adjustable bracket for rafters separately, and Bunnings do still sell the fixed angle 22.5 deg bracket for MUCH less, however I couldn't vouch for the quality control on the latter. And to comment on Dukekamaya's post: Yes, hanging anything off fascia board is not brilliant. However, these brackets go through the fascia and attach to the existing rafters. In fact, the recommended method is to use one of these brackets every 120mm (every 2nd rafter) and use C section galvanised steel to firm up the existing rafter itself as well (sometimes on both sides). Note that some councils may want to see engineer's specifications to do this, regardless of which way you do it. I'd suggest that because every roof is different, that it's a good idea to get and engineer anyway. Re: Pergola roof attachment 9Mar 25, 2011 9:54 am Hi Handyman I have a 12 meter long pergola , i simply bolted at every roof truss a 90x45 1000mm long piece F7 pine to the house truss cut at one end same as roof pitch this finished behind the gutter fascia. You can then use some 100or120mm bungle head screws to mount a timber fascia i used 140x45mm to this under your existing gutter. Then at every 2nd truss added a pryda truss bracket just to make sure.
