Browse Forums Outdoor Living Re: More deck questions 2Dec 21, 2018 5:10 pm Posted this a while back Anyone with any low deck building experiences able to assist before i make a costly mistake? Much appreciated Callozoonge Hi I have read several threads on here concerning decks, especially those that deal with my situation, but cannot find definite answers to the questions I have.... hope someone can help who has done similar! Situation: I want to lay a low deck in my alfresco/patio area over the top of existing cement pavers I have approx 90mm between top of pavers and door and window sills. I do NOT want to remove pavers and excavate sand to allow for traditional bearer/joist/deck construction I am thinking of 90x45 H3 joists at approx 400mm centres built into a frame (or 2+ frames) with the 90mm side down (45mm high), I am thinking 23mm composite decking boards and raising frame off pavers using 10mm thick plastic packers screwed into place every 300mm (total height approx 78mm) I will remove some pavers below the deck area and fill the spaces with gravel to allow better drainage Total finished area being approx 8800 x 6300 but in a few stages probably ($$$) Questions: 1. Does the above construction technique sound OK? 2. Will I need to attach this thing to the floor? It will weigh a LOT but is that enough to guarantee that it does not lift in a strong wind? If i need posts just would along the 2 exposed edges be OK? Thanks in advance Re: More deck questions 3Jan 22, 2019 11:44 pm Basically your plan is to do away with joists and just install bearers at 40cm spacings to attach the deck timbers to? (in some sort of framed box sure, but really its only bearers or joists bearing weight) And then rest that system on plastic blocks and just have it 'sit there' on existing paving? IFYI, 'm pretty sure bunnings sell a system similar to this. So it might be worth having a look at how that works to see if it suits or can be adapted. IN response to the question. I cant answer as a professional but can pose some questions to you. Have you looked at span guides for decking? My span guide says the joists should only be 45cm apart and should measure 140 by 45. Youre going to use a timber half that size at almost the same interval. Depending entirely on the Quality of the paving, if the whole thing is just 'resting' in place and the ground below shifts, youll be farked trying to rectify a sunk paver that a portion of your deck is resting on in the future. If i was you, I would post up the pavers for cheap or free on a buy swap sell page. people will come and take them away, I would then get a bloke with a kanga/dingo to come round and remove an amount of top soil/sand, so I could could atleast get enough clearance for the right speck joists. I would then dig holes, cement in proper stirrups to attach to the right spec joists. I've just built 3 stairs off a landing out the back and been told by the private certifier I need hand rails sorry tried to attach a pic but couldn't mine don't have sides… 5 5721 So I'm just reading up on this ecosystem of lights. I'm planning on putting deck lights along the outside edge of a large deck. Will need about 3 packs (18 lights) plus… 0 23025 Hi, does anyone have any experience with using Trex rain escape or EPDM rubber to waterproof a deck so you have dry space underneath.
