Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 30, 2008 10:08 pm hi all you wise kitchen folk
i was wondering if someone could help me please. We are putting in a modular kitchen (the kitchen is nearly ready! Our first idea was to rip out kitchen, get our floorboard guy to do the first sand etc) then install kitchen and he would come back and finish it off (polish, gloss etc) For info - the rest of house is already done and looks fantastic but we left the kitchen floor (ugly vinyl on floorboards). Now, the dilemma - our floorboard guy is not available until January 2009! (and others seem very hard to find!) so my question is - is it feasible to rip out kitchen, install new kitchen (mainly white) and then do the floorboards after? or is there a high chance that the kitchen will get damaged in some way? Sorry for the long post and thanks for any advice! nutty p.s. i havent picked a splashback yet (probably tiles). can this be done a couple of months after installation? Re: floorboards in kitchen (what to reno in order?) 2Sep 30, 2008 10:24 pm Hello Nutty
From my own experience I was told to 1. put the windows in 2. put the floor down ie. floorboards 3. put the kitchen in. I believe that u can put the kitchen in first but it is best to do it the above way so that the kitchen can sit on the floorboards. I'm sure you can do it your way if necessary or else perhaps find someone else to do the floorboards. Good luck Re: floorboards in kitchen (what to reno in order?) 3Sep 30, 2008 10:24 pm Do the kitchen now.
The sanding machine should not damage the kitchen. The only marginal issue will be the sander will not do right up to the very edge of the cupboard where it meets the floor - but a minor issue IMO. When the floor is been sanded remove the kickers and end panels first. Then replace them after the floor polishing is done Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: floorboards in kitchen (what to reno in order?) 6Oct 02, 2008 9:33 am I agree with Kevin.
I have seen quite a few kicks damaged from sanding and polishing, especially brushed stainless/aluminium finishes - the boards get scratched from the machining and then when the floors are coated the laquer is difficult to keep off the kicks. Kevin, I think you use adjsutable legs as well don't you? This makes taking the kicks off very easy - it can be a bit more of a problem if the cabinet maker uses a ladder base as these often have the kick face attached or laminated in the workshop. I don't like ladder bases but a lot of cabinetmakers still do; sometimes for good reasons but other times... If you won't be able to get the kicks off then I would definitely recommend doing the floors first - just make sure that they get plenty of time to cure and that whoever installs them is carefull. One installer I use takes his boots off and works in his socks when he is doing a kitchen on polished boards...gotta see about getting him some steel capped socks...
