Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 30, 2008 4:13 pm We have an insinkerator that's about 12 years old and we don't want it.
It seems to scare my partner for some strange and amusing reason. I'm used to them since we had one at my parents' house, but we never used it there either. We want it out, as it takes up SO much room (and there isn't a lot to begin with) underneath the sink in the cupboard. How difficult would it be for a plumber to do this? Just remove the stuff under the sink and the pipes etc going to the second sink with the insinkerator plug hole in it? (we'd get a new sink from Harvey Norman or The Good Guys) Also, I hear the Good Guys install sinks for a flat fee of $100. Would it be better to get them to remove the insinkerator (if they even do this), or get someone else to remove it and then just pay The Good Guys the $100 fee to install the new sink? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How hard is it to remove an insinkerator? 4Oct 01, 2008 9:33 am Insinkerators freak me out too... I think it had somehting to do with a horror movie I saw once.
Slightly off topic I have been seeing insinkerators advertised lately as being the more environmentally friendly way to dispose of scaps, can anyone tell me why. I think it goes along the lines of less methane released...? Sandra Re: How hard is it to remove an insinkerator? 5Oct 01, 2008 12:13 pm Cool. We just don’t use it and don’t intend to, and we need the space under the sink, and blah, blah. Lol
Whoever asked what an insinkerator is, you’re right. It’s just a thing that is under/in one of the sinks in a double sink and you put food scraps (no pips or hard things, just things like soft foods, fruit peels, etc) in it (down this big plug hole thing) and then turn on the switch at the wall and it makes this loud noise as it “munches” up all the scraps and they go into somewhere…not sure where! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: How hard is it to remove an insinkerator? 6Oct 01, 2008 4:19 pm Personally, I don't think insinkerators are environmentally friendly at all. They add all sorts of nutrients to the water supply and that would enable things like blue/green algae to flourish.
My Mum has always had one, but I told her yesterday we're not getting one in the new house. She didn't seem to mind. Judie Re: How hard is it to remove an insinkerator? 7Oct 02, 2008 6:52 am The insinkerator can be replaced with a waste basket type plug
I'll try to find a photo Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ By KevinBrown It should fit in the same size hole the insinkerator used Look at this web site http://www.oliverisinks.com/au/accessories.cfm Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: How hard is it to remove an insinkerator? 9Oct 02, 2008 10:35 am donuts Kevin Brown, can those waste basket type plugs be bought for normal sinks? I like them (Sorry to hijack GS) The hole they fit in is larger than a standard one The hole needs to be 92mm diameter to take a waste basket, and yes you can buy them separately from plumbing shops Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: How hard is it to remove an insinkerator? 10Oct 02, 2008 1:11 pm If I remember corectly, the insinkerator comes in 2 parts - the sink fitting and the unit itself.
his shot shows what I mean, You can see the silver bracket atthe top: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Unplug the power, and put a bucket under the unit. Undo the bottom waste Outlet. I think you can detatch the unit from the sink attachment, then the unit should be free. Then unscrew the sink attachment and install as per KB's posts above. They are great those plugs BTW.
