Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 30, 2019 11:34 am Hi all, I'm thinking of adding an extension to current benchtop as breakfast bar. I've never done similar project so not sure if my idea works. This is my current benchtop, 154cm x 64cm. What should I use to glue the extension to current? Suppose I'll screw the 3 shelf brackets to cupboard and pine, how do I connect the pine to extension? Basically I want to make sure the extension is well supported and stable. Thanks in advance. Re: adding an extension to current benchtop 2Dec 31, 2019 7:28 pm If you are looking at an overhang of 300mm, and by the look of your beauitiful sketch you shouldn't need all those brackets and pine etc. You have at least 300mm bearing on the existing benchtop. You simply need to drill some pilot holes in the existing benchtop and screw from beneath and securely fix it together. Need some nice heavy duty fixings maybe battens screws. Make sense?? Re: adding an extension to current benchtop 3Dec 31, 2019 8:08 pm Hi MClark, that makes sense. So using batten screw (instead of adhesive) would be strong enough to fix them together? The reason I'm using bracket is to reduce the bearing length if possible (so I could have more usable space on existing bench). But does that sounds not so stable? Re: adding an extension to current benchtop 4Dec 31, 2019 10:13 pm I think you'd get away with 300mm overhang and 200mm bearing on existing benchtop. I'd put two fixings at 250mm spacings. Even use adhesives for extra strength would work. MC Registered Building - Always happy to help where I can and simply loves the game.
