Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 24, 2019 8:15 am Building a new house and wondering about putting the induction cooktop (900mm V-Zug) in a centre island bench (4.7x1.2m) along with a small single bowl sink. Idea is that nearly all prep & cooking would be done on this island. We have another "outer' L-shaped island bench sitting in front of the central island, see very rough pic attached. Fridge, pantry, ovens etc are on wall behind central island, with dishwasher underneath island, meaning pretty much everything required for prep & cooking is within 2-3 steps (we do a lot of cooking & entertaining). Was thinking of having a ceiling cassette rangehood above the cooktop, something like: https://www.schweigen.com.au/appliances/ceiling-cassettes/schweigen-silent-rangehood-ceiling-cassette-1200mm The ceiling above the kitchen is a drop-down bulkhead at 2520mm high, and the kitchen is all open plan into a wide family room behind. Question is, will the rangehood sufficiently deal with the smoke and steam so it doesn't spread around the room? I'm doubting it will pull much of the oil out, so I assume that will land down on the bench? Any recommendations either way or comments on the design in general? To be completely honest, I'm not really taken by the whole design. It’s less to do with the location of the cooktop, but more about the "second" island with the inbuilt dining table. It would be fine in a Teppanyaki restaurant or if you are an award winning chef, but seems pretentious if you are not. It’s your house, however, so you should get what you want, but please think carefully about how you cook - not just everyday, but during different occasions. Not every meal is completed before a dinner party starts, and if you are frying anything, oil and fat will be splattering all over your guests. Also, what about those occasions when you are cooking steak in an extra hot and smoking skillet. Smoke will be surrounding the cooktop irrespective of how good your rangehood is. With respect to extraction, I don’t think a ceiling mounted rangehood like the one you linked to will cut it at all, not unless it sucks like a Rolls Royce jet engine (read: expensive). Your best bet would be a pillar style that comes down from the ceiling to sit 700 to 1000mm above the cooktop. Perhaps something from the Argyle range from Qasair, or even using one of their outdoor rangehoods inside. Alternatively, you could use an downdraft/in-bench extractor, although they have mixed reviews and also need to be powerful (again, expensive). Re: Induction cooktop in island bench - good or bad idea? 3Dec 24, 2019 11:45 am Thanks Arcadelt Some fair points there... I should have noted that the drop-down table is for family use not for entertaining - we have a separate dining room for seating guests. We'd normally only have 6 chairs around the table, on the outer side of the kitchen: i just drew in a couple more for in the event the kids a couple of friends around. But might need some rethinking. Yes, I'm worried about exactly that with smoking skillets - how well the room will cope with that ceiling rangehood. Would love to hear from anyone that has something similar. The kitchen faces out to an open plan family room, so love the idea of facing the family when cooking. Re: Induction cooktop in island bench - good or bad idea? 4Dec 24, 2019 2:48 pm Not sure your budget, but have you considered a downdraft rangehood instead? https://siriusbrand.com/downdraft-rangehood-collection/ https://www.miele.com.au/domestic/downdraft-systems-3567.htm Re: Induction cooktop in island bench - good or bad idea? 5Dec 29, 2019 5:46 am Have you looked at Bora? We are currently looking at putting one in, downdraft and induction combined, they are amazing and reasonably priced (when you consider cost of good rangehood and cooktop) Re: Induction cooktop in island bench - good or bad idea? 6Dec 29, 2019 10:03 pm - Love the space you have. It is brilliant, it is great. Have you looked this one up for some extra help but it will affect the look. https://www.remodelista.com/posts/remod ... hen-vents/ Just a bit of other thinking, please forgive me if you could not get the ideas behind your design. - If you go in the direction of food preparation is the central activity then the location of the cooktop is in its way. While cooking is going on, everything else around it will be affected. Think about fish frying, steak... Cooking does not take that long but everything else before and after. - About the round table, I personally feel incomplete if I were to sit in one of the chair. It would be a bit weird if I sit opposite the joint because I would have to continuously look left or right to feel linked - The island should have some sort of overhang to protect the base cabinets just in case. My daughter and son in law are about to start building, they are having a 600mm induction cook top and 900mm oven. It's personal preferance 5 10863 You must be new to the internet.
