Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 25, 2008 2:41 pm We're getting towards the final kitchen design to lock in. We've been looking at it for weeks now, and think we've covered everything. Can anyone pick or see anything wrong or that might need adding?
The biggest decision (besides final colours and benchtops) is whether to have a breakfast bar or cupboards along the back of the island. The dining table will be right next to the kitchen anyway so maybe we don't really need the extra seating. And more cupboard space is always a good thing. I would also keep a bit of an overhang at the breakfast bar, if only 150mm or so - this makes it more comfortable for people to stand at the other side of the island. More storage is always a good thing but I think your space is better served with less cabinetry in the island area...and MORE DRAWERS. I second Strumer's comment - I'd replace all underbench cupboards with pot drawers if I were you. And - I'm a fan of the breakfast bar myself Looks like a good design which you've put lots of effort into - well done Re: Kitchen design - comments/suggestions?? 4Sep 25, 2008 4:37 pm Thanks guys. I hear what you're saying about replacing cupboards with drawers. I'm a big fan of drawers, but the wife isn't so keen, for some reason. I'll have to do the big sell and get more drawers in there somehow Cheers, Pete viewtopic.php?f=38&t=8824 Re: Kitchen design - comments/suggestions?? 5Sep 25, 2008 4:59 pm Hi Peter,
Just wondering if the way the fridge has been drawn in, is the way it will open (with the handle on the left and hinge on the right)? It would flow a lot better if the fridge opened with the hinge on the left and handle on the right, or you'll be forever walking 'around' the open door to get things out and put things on to the bench. Don't know about you, but it would annoy me no end!! ..and I definitely agree with more drawers! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Kitchen design - comments/suggestions?? 8Sep 26, 2008 11:43 am Would you consider moving the sink to the edge of the island bench? that way you have more island bench space?
And def more pot drawers!! Re: Kitchen design - comments/suggestions?? 9Sep 26, 2008 12:02 pm Yep, more drawers! I would have crockery drawers to the right of the kitchen sink and three sets on the stove side.
You can compromise on the island bench. We put a small shallow vertical cupboard at each end of our island bench, with seating area in the middle. The cupboards are about 35cm wide and 25cm deep, so with three shelves in each can store 2 dozen tumblers or wine glases (much better than having someone come into the kitchen area to grab one out of the overheads). Just have to be careful with the proportions. Re: Kitchen design - comments/suggestions?? 10Sep 26, 2008 2:05 pm I agree too... Replace as many of the under bench cupboards as possible with pot drawers. In our kitchen design for the new house my wife has now got us up to 16 pot drawers (including a couple at the bottom of the pantry behind the doors) and 2 banks of normal drawers. At first I did not like the idea of all these draws but now I can see the benefits!
What about a bulkhead above the cupboards along the wall if you haven't already. A lot of dust and crap tends to gather on top of the cupboards otherwise! I also like the idea of putting in a raised breakfast bar on the island benchtop. You can create interest in the look of the island by not having it run the whole length but in stead stop it short of 1 or both edges. On these edges you can then have a small cupboard while the raised breakfast bar has the benefits of providing a small splash back for the sink, hides any mess in/or around the sink and provides a comfortable place for people to sit for breaky or for a chat while someone is cooking or cleaning up! Finally Designing and building the home I always wanted to! Re: Kitchen design - comments/suggestions?? 11Sep 26, 2008 2:52 pm I'm with Wonderland. I would put the sink to one side. I know it changes the balance but it is so sensible and I've seen it in an almost identical kitchen layout and it looks fine. Re: Kitchen design - comments/suggestions?? 13Sep 26, 2008 3:05 pm I like having the sink at one end also. We used to have the sink in the middle of the bench and it meant talking to people over dishes
So the last house and the next house will be sink at one end just like SuH mentioned talking and congregating at one end and dishes at the other. Re: Kitchen design - comments/suggestions?? 18Oct 02, 2008 11:44 am Thanks for all the suggestions people. I'm going to lobby for more drawers around the place. I reckon they're much handier and better for access than cupboards.
We're leaning towards having the cupboards along the back, but then extending the benchtop out to give a smaller breakfast bar, or "leaning" area. Although the idea of a cupboard on each end was a good one. Thanks again for the ideas. Exactly what we needed. I'll get back to you when we've got the final version sorted.
