Or should I use a smaller cook top. Do you think it will all look too squished up. I didn't really want to have a sink on island bench. thanks in advance. Have you mapped it out on a piece of paper to get an idea of what it would look like? Re: SINK & COOKTOP ON SAME BENCH 3Jun 15, 2019 2:05 pm Yes I have, I could have 300mm between wall oven & the cooktop, then approx. 600mm between cooktop & sink drainer, then another 300mm bench space past the sink. which will be then end of bench, as there is then a doorway to passage. I'm guessing the edge 300mm from the cooktop with the wall unit will have a vertical wall, in which case, because it is so close, can you extend the splash back material onto that wall too? Do you have a dishwasher? If so, why do you need such a big sink? I'd suggest the drain side of the sink should be near the end of the bench? Otherwise you'll probably be forever mopping up the floor due to over splash. Re: SINK & COOKTOP ON SAME BENCH 5Jun 15, 2019 2:33 pm That's exactly the layout we have in our kitchen. We've just moved in a month ago and it's working perfectly. We have the DW between the cooktop and sink. We only have a double bowl undermount with no drainer so it's around 850 instead of the 1200 I'll get a picture and post it up. Here it is. Our kitchen is L shaped at the end and returns with an appliance cupboard, pantry and fridge space, where it sounds like yours is a straight line. Ours is 4.4m from ovens to the end wall. Layout (from left to right) is oven stack600, 300 single door, 930 3drawer cooktop, 600DW, 840 2 door sink, 450 corner pull out and then 650 benchtop. My wife didn't want a sink on the island bench this time so I designed it so everything fitted on the back bench and it leaves the island (a real feature in our house) as a nice clean surface. Working between the ovens, hotplate and sink has worked well. The island bench behind gives heaps of prep area if needed. My wife is delighted with the look and layout. After 6 weeks she wouldn't change a thing. I build and design kitchens (including this one) and am a strong believer that form and function need to come together in a kitchen. I often see kitchens that look great in a display home but the reality of living in and using it every day are quite different. Having said that, every person lives in their house differently from others so what works for our family or one client can be very different to the next. Our will be in reverse to yours. I think I still want a 1&3/4 sink with drainer. but I might have a slightly smaller cooktop. Do you have an induction cooktop, if so how do you find it. I'm so use to gas. So much to consider, hence the reason for joining this forum.. Thanks again xx Re: SINK & COOKTOP ON SAME BENCH 9Jun 15, 2019 9:00 pm ![]() Do you have an induction cooktop, if so how do you find it. I'm so use to gas. We have an induction cooktop. Previously always had gas. Wouldn’t go back if you paid me (well, except for the gas wok hob we continue with). Re: SINK & COOKTOP ON SAME BENCH 10Jun 15, 2019 9:31 pm Arcadelt is right. Induction is quick, clean, controllable and leaves a nice flat surface when not in use We've had them in our last 2 houses. Would never choose gas. The rental we had while we were building had gas. We forgot how much we disliked it. My wife and I are doing the layout of our kitchen now, we are the same - don't want the sink in the island. She suggested single bowl sink last night. To confirm based on what you wrote for cupboard widths, the bench width looking front on is 3120? https://ibb.co/w0Dz7Kq Ours is 4180 wide and we need to fit the oven stack in there, so will be ballpark 3450-3500W for bench. With your oven, what made you go for the oven heights? We are going to have 2 oven cavities, but would like to start them at 600-700mm off the ground. We have a gas stove and it's so hard to keep our 14 month away from it. My mother in law has her ovens between 700 and 1900mm off ground level and the little monster doesn't seem to notice it or go near it. Re: SINK & COOKTOP ON SAME BENCH 12May 13, 2021 3:40 pm Hi Budapest Your picture with dimension is correct. It's roughly 3120mm across the front of the bench plus a 650 return in the corner where we tuck the kettle at one end and oven stack on the other end. Our sink is a double bowl undermount. My wife often leaves a drainer in one sink for hand washed items. The height of the ovens is really dictated by the height of the overheads in our kitchen. I wanted the cupboard line to right through including the cupboards above the ovens. My wife isn't super tall and realistically wouldn't want them any higher as lifting heavy things off high shelves can be problematic. The ovens in the oven stack are a 600 oven on the bottom and a 450 combination microwave above. We have another 600 oven under the end of the island opposite the other ovens. We are going for a second dishwasher so the smaller sink helps. With the hotplate placement, what do you think the closest you could position to the left hand side (the oven stack)? We would be trying to maximise the gap in the middle between the sink and hotplate. Do the rangehoods generally the same cabinet width as the hotplate? We would be trying to maximise the gap in the middle between the sink and hotplate. Do the rangehoods generally the same cabinet width as the hotplate? The second dishwasher option is quite popular nowadays. As far as the gap on the side of the cooktop goes you can take it right down to 100mm if you like but realistically you need a bit of room. Ours sits at 300 off the oven stack and personality I wouldn't go much less. It always looks better if the overheads are the same width as the base units but not all rangehoods fit the same width cabinet as the cooktop so you need to pick the wider of the two and then use that for the sizing of the base and overheads if you want it to line up. My wife and I worked through a few more things. We agree with your 300mm gap from edge to hotplate so have used that, so we are thinking the single bowl to allow the sink to be further to the right side and maximise the space between the hotplate and sink. https://ibb.co/Tg2QLKN Re: SINK & COOKTOP ON SAME BENCH 16May 22, 2023 9:09 am Not sure what made me think of this thread, but we are wrapt with our layout - oven, hot plate, sink and two dishwashers on the backbench and island with nothing on it. https://ibb.co/4JvdTtF https://ibb.co/hyPnRkq Island is 2935 wide, the back bench has 3465 usable space Only installed one oven but space is built for two, using microwave there for now Re: SINK & COOKTOP ON SAME BENCH 17May 22, 2023 10:00 am ![]() Not sure what made me think of this thread, but we are wrapt with our layout - oven, hot plate, sink and two dishwashers on the backbench and island with nothing on it. https://ibb.co/4JvdTtF https://ibb.co/hyPnRkq Island is 2935 wide, the back bench has 3465 usable space Only installed one oven but space is built for two, using microwave there for now Looks good Budapest. I much prefer island benches that don't have anything on them. We find that layout functions well.
