Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 31, 2018 3:21 pm Hi all! We're first time home owners and are building through a volume builder. We will be having our appointment to pick everything very soon, but have already had some pricing done up for us, one of which is for an upgrade to the kitchen cabinet doors. We want a shaker style door, and when we were at the showroom our consultant said it would be about $60 a door for the thermolaminate stuff, however when we've been given a price breakdown, it looks as though they don't just charge for the doors, they upgrade all the cabinets to that material as well. We were wanting some opinions on whether it seemed like a stupid idea to get the standard cabinets and flat doors, and then upgrading to a shaker profile after handover, whether that be going through Bunnings or hiring a custom cabinetry person, rather than doing it through the builder? The price of doing it through the builder looks to be around $3000 just for the kitchen alone, ideally I would like to have the bathrooms done as well but for that price, I just can't justify it. My worst fear would be not being able to easily get the profile doors we want because the cabinets are an odd size, but even having someone custom do the doors, would it be likely this would approach a $3000 price tag? Has anyone that uses this website done this? I see plenty of tutorials for doing this on older kitchens, but I'd like to know if someone has gone through a new build only to change cabinet doors afterwards. Thanks in advance! Re: Changing cabinet doors after handover? 2Aug 01, 2018 5:50 pm First of all congrats on getting your first home! If you want the shaker style doors yes thermolaminated doors from Polytec are the cheapest. They wouldn't make the cabinet caracass' out of the same stuff, it would be doors AND panels. I'm a Cabinet Maker and my suggestion would be to go cheap in regards to the doors and panels, and seek a Cabinet Maker to just replace the doors to what you want after handover. He should have the facilities and the connections to get customised doors to what you need. I did something similar for a client of mine and for a medium size kitchen and I was able to do it for half the cost a "bigger" company or builder would do. Re: Changing cabinet doors after handover? 3Aug 02, 2018 7:52 am Personally I wouldn't use "thermolaminate stuff" in a kitchen. If you google vinyl wrap you will see 1000s of people complaining about it lifting around head sources like ovens, toaster and kettles. They are only upgrading the doors, the internal cabinets will stay the same. To upgrade you doors after hand over would cost around $3000 or more anyway. There is no issue with odd sizes cabinets, shaker doors can be order by a cabinet maker in any size.
