We're in the early stages of designing a new kitchen. The space we have is essentially empty (it is currently the living room – no need to go into those details) and we are aiming for something along the lines of an 'L plus island' as in the attached screenshot. (Ignore the horrible materials and colours – I'm limited by the app!)
For the sake of this discussion, assume that the fridge and adjacent pantry cupboard are fixed, and our preference is to keep the island bench clear.
My question for the forum is around the relative positions of the stove and sink. An architect friend tells me that the traditional 'kitchen triangle' approach would put the sink between the fridge and the stove (i.e. swapped from what is shown here). Obviously if we did that the oven would move too.
However I've been studying the zone approach and to me it would make more sense to have the arrangement as shown in the picture. That way the consumables zone is at one end, the fridge-end of the island becomes the preparation zone (with suitable storage underneath), across from that is cooking, then cleaning. Crockery and cutlery would be stored at the window end of the island, opposite the dishwasher.
So, in summary, all else being equal, which way around would you have the stove and sink, and why?
