What have you all decided to do about having teatowel rails in your new kitchens ?
How have you installed them & where ?
Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Teatowel rail 2Aug 31, 2008 4:46 pm If I'd thought of this before this very minute I would have maybe got a small slimline cupboard next to the oven with a pull out rack? or in the walk in pantry.
as it is I'll probably end up doing what I always have - hang the tea towels on the oven handle! Re: Teatowel rail 3Aug 31, 2008 4:56 pm yes, i've totally forgotten about it also. What gets me is that the kitchen consultant didn't even suggest it . Maybe because he was a man ?
Geez, I'm going to be in trouble now...... Re: Teatowel rail 5Aug 31, 2008 5:20 pm Actually, I'll check out my kitchen drawings to see if I can fit one in under the sink. Thanks for the suggestion. Otherwise, I'll be doing the same as donuts Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Teatowel rail 6Aug 31, 2008 6:04 pm We will have an open shelf between the under sink cupboards and the dishwasher. It will have a slide out towel rail. We kept it open so that the tea towels will dry. It is 20cm wide.
Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I wish I'd thought of that Quote: Hanging them on the oven makes your kitchen look messy I agree totally - not much choice though, if it won't fit beneath the sink. I've always hung ours on the oven. I'd like a rail next to the fridge if it fits. That's where mum and dad have theirs and it works well. Re: Teatowel rail 10Aug 31, 2008 7:25 pm I'm with Paddy's parents - tea towels are items that I need to get to without having to open a door or pull out a rail.
This is a function vs. aesthetic issue...I think that there are some aspects of kitchen design that are concentrating too much on the looks instead of practicality. Watch a chef in a kitchen and odds on he/she will have a tea towel tucked into their apron or over their shoulder. Another way of looking at it is that a tea towel really is an incredible repository/breeding ground for bacteria - all that damp and organics; and should be put to wash on a much more regular basis than most of us probably do - in which case dedicate a drawer or shelf to a big stack of towels, pull one out while you are cooking or working and throw it in the wash at the end of the session. One load for tea towels in your washing cycle - they don't need to be ironed, just folded. I'd like a rail next to the fridge if it fits. That's where mum and dad have theirs and it works well. that's a good idea. Most of us have to have a wider fridge cavity anyway to accommodate opening doors (unless you choose to have them poke out), so you could just stick one in there. Re: Teatowel rail 12Aug 31, 2008 8:41 pm The drying issue is a good point- I'm still happy with the cupboard as a solution for us, as we tend to drip dry all the dishes except the chef knives, so the tea towel is never actually wet- maybe slightly damp at the worst. If you actually use the tea towel to dry everything it's probably not that great an idea. Re: Teatowel rail 13Aug 31, 2008 10:52 pm Another vote for on the oven rail here, much healthier than hanging inside a cupboard breeding damp and germs IMO, and usually stove is close to sink so handy position.
I don't think they make the kitchen look messy, any more than towels on a rail make a bathroom look messy, normal looking place to me. This is in the butler's pantry between the dishwasher and the undersink cupboards. The area is open for the tea towels to air and they will be on a double slide out rail.

I was going to hang mine on the oven handles to camouflage the silver handles on my white oven. (Long story). I like the idea of the fridge option. Very clever. I'm the only one who hangs the damn thing back up again anyway! Also I have to ask Paula and Petal - you don't iron pillow cases and hankies do you??!
