Building my first home and did not quite realise how odd the kitchen cabinets would look with a gap in the middle and opening from the side. Does anyone have any suggestions ie, removing cupboard and placing a corner cupboard in or putting shelving in. Unfortunately not able to ask builder to change due to cost. Any help is much appreciated. Re: Help with Kitchen crabinet layout 2Dec 07, 2017 9:47 pm Hi Sarah If I was designing your kitchen I would have continued the overheads in an L shape around the wall with the pantry, butting up to the pantry and put the microwave box on that wall. I also prefer to make the overheads the same depth as the microwave box otherwise it seems like it is jutting out. It's a bit of an awkward corner and realistically the microwave box is making a fair portion of benchtop redundant as it sits quite low. I'd put it next to the pantry and lift it up a little so the area under the microwave is a little more useful. That makes a lot more sense, do you think it will be feasible to do? Can I reposition the existing microwave box and add an L shape cabinet without it breaking the bank? Re: Help with Kitchen cabinet layout 4Dec 07, 2017 10:03 pm Will the microwave door even open fully in that little corner? It looks quite tight at the moment Find my build thread here: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=88694&f=31&p=1729530#p1729530 Re: Help with Kitchen cabinet layout 5Dec 07, 2017 10:11 pm Hi Sarah Actually, looking at it again I'd just run the overheads from the pantry to the back wall. No L shape. I'd make them as deep as the microwave box and lift the whole lot up until the MW box is 400mm above the bench (if that's not too high for you). That way you will have more usable bench space. If you do it after hand over the cabinetry itself is not that much, it will be the bulkhead and cornice that will need to be changed. The power point for the MW box may be in the wrong spot, and there may not be any plaster set behind the existing overheads. That may make it a little bit of an expensive exercise.
