Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 27, 2017 11:03 am Hi All, My kitchen in my new house will have 2 downlights in the middle, but over the island bench I was planning to have 3 pendant lights with vintage filament globes in them. My concern was the light output. My island bench will have the sink and will be my main meal prep area. Will task lighting be an issue with these globes? Another option I'm considering is running track lighting above with 3 spotlights with bright white lights in them. I'm going for an industrial look. Re: vintage filament globes over island bench 2Nov 27, 2017 11:31 am I was thinking the same thing over our island bench but after talking with the lighting guys basically the globes have a very short useful life and are more for aesthetics than for lighting. In short you will need other lights for meal preparation and be constantly changing globes but it will look pretty good. Re: vintage filament globes over island bench 4Dec 22, 2017 3:59 pm Actually forgot I made this thread. Woops! Thanks for the responses guys. I did look into the LED filament globes as an option. Not sure how well these work for light output, but another option I'm considering is using normal LED pendants over the island and have a cluster of pendants over the dining table near-by for ambient lighting. Re: vintage filament globes over island bench 5Dec 27, 2017 2:42 pm The filament globes, both LED and halogen are for mood/show only. The light they give off is low and yellow. What you need are LED down lights to give the main working light, then if you want the pendants add them for mood. My kitchen I have 3 central downlights and one over the sink, plus hanging 3 pendants with said filament globes. The only time they come on is if we have a dinner party where we turn off the main kitchen lights and have the 3 pendands running along with the dining room light. Re: vintage filament globes over island bench 6Dec 27, 2017 2:47 pm Got any pics? I'm just wondering how this would work and how you space out your downlights and pendants over the island. Doesn't the light cast a shadow over the bench due to the pendants? Re: vintage filament globes over island bench 7Dec 27, 2017 4:09 pm Not the brightest of pics, but you get the idea. You can see the down lights running down the middle of the room. There is 3 in a row and a 4th which is hard to see just near the pantry entry, which is the room the opening leads to. And we don't get any shadowing on the bench from the down lights, I am guessing it is because if you block the light from one of them there are a couple of others coming from different angles lighting up the bench.
