Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 26, 2008 1:59 pm For those with laminate benchtops .....what is the overhang you have at the end of your benches? our kitchen is a U shape....our cupboards are 560 deep + door depth 18mm, bench width will be 600mm so overhang at the front of benches will be about 2cm - do i do the same for the bench ends of my U shaped kitchen? Re: quick Q - overhang with benchtops 2Aug 26, 2008 2:10 pm What sort of profile do you have on your tops - I am assuming some sort of "squareform" or similar?
A benchtop needs to overhang a minimum of the radius of your profile - so if you have 2 x 5mm radii then the top needs at least 5mm overhang...but 20 - 25mm is the norm for the front of benches to also prevent drips from running down the cupboard doors - a lot of tops now also have a "drip groove" routed into the underside which must stand clear of the doors. On the ends of a cabinet run (like on your U shape) it is pretty much preference. Do you have postformed ends as well or are they laminated square? If they are square then they can be flush with the end panels, but I don't really like this look very much and prefer to provide an over hang at bench ends of between 25mm - 50mm. This makes the bench stand out far enough that you can walk around the end of the cabinets with less chance of kicking the end panels or the kickboard....and I just find the look more aesthetically pleasing. Cheers, Earl Re: quick Q - overhang with benchtops 3Aug 26, 2008 5:26 pm Thanks heaps for that Earl. Appreciate it. Benches are going to be polytech square edge profile as unfortunately the colour i am after doesn't come in their tightform profile. Think i'll work off a 25mm overhang. Again, thanks!!! Re: quick Q - overhang with benchtops 4Aug 26, 2008 7:33 pm Thanks for the thanks.
Here are a few shots of how our tops end. Sorry I don't have any more detailed images of the overhang - I can try to remember to take one next time I am in the studio. This top is Polytec 38mm with 2 x 6mm Tightform profile, with square ends and jigged corners. The front overhang is 25mm to the doors and the end is 50mm to the board; I always think 50mm will look a lot more than it does... But as you have square edges a lesser overhang will still work well. Just as an aside, I know this is pretty old tech, but when we need minced meat at home we buy a nice cut and put it through this great old hand mincer I got in Germany - the big problem is that it needs to clamp to the edge of a benchtop and the overhang on our home kitchen is not wide enough (only 25mm) for the machine to get a proper grip...but I doubt this would be much of a problem for most people these days. Cheers, Earl We have an old fashioned meat mincer as well! Nothing modern can get the right consistency. We actually have this little side table that has been kept only to attach the meat mincer to. Protects the benchtops and one can sit down and watch telly while mincing. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. We tried using the kitchen table as well, but would you beleive it is too thin to be gripped at 16mm and needs to be packed out? And now that we have an 8 month old Great Dane Puppy in the house who already needs to bend down to sniff the table top we like to work on the counter when we can. And wow, I thought I would be the only old school prep person around, given that most people laugh when I tell them we mince our own meat. I completely agree about the consistancy of the mince. As well as being really easy to clean and such cool machines generally - and the end result is just not comparable to most meats you would buy. Whoops, thread drift...time for some traction control... Terrence Malick In the end, two pieces of treated timber (20mm thick) were bolted onto the joists and planed when there was too much sticking out.
