Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 07, 2017 9:27 am We are having an open plan kitchen/living area/dining room on the bottom floor of our new house and plan to tile throughout - as well as the hallway and tiles on the patio as well. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether we go for glossy, shiny tiles or matte tiles in these areas? Shiny looks more "fancy" I guess but there is a lot of reflection of lights (we are having downlights) and we wondered about whether marks and dirt are more easily seen. Or which tiles are easier to keep clean? Re: Tiles - Gloss or Matte??? 2Aug 07, 2017 10:03 am I've always been a bigger fan of Matte tiles as I believe the reflections on a gloss tile make it hard to appreciate the look of the tile. But as you said Gloss tiles do somehow have a reputation of being more "Fancy". Having lived in a house with shiny tiles, I can definitely say dirt shows up more as well because it makes the area Matt and stands out from the Shiny surface. Re: Tiles - Gloss or Matte??? 3Aug 07, 2017 8:31 pm We bought a sample of tiles we liked in both matte and shiny and sat them at the back entry of our house before we committed. I loved the look of matte, my husband preferred the shiny. We also have a dog and two big kids as well. Anyway after living with them for a few months I found that the matte tiles were harder to wipe the stains off. The water would somehow attract dust and mark (it does come off when washed). The shiny were somewhat more forgiving and easier to clean.. So that's what we are having in our new house but that is just our opinion. The fact that they reflect the light is actually a good thing, whereas matt tend to look dirtier/ streaks show up more. Just my opinion after living with glossy tiles for 10 yrs! I only need to mop them every 2-3 months as they always look clean (no kids in our house though) Our 37sq Custom Hamptons Inspired Home: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=86931 Re: Tiles - Gloss or Matte??? 6Aug 08, 2017 7:13 am Personally, we dislike the look of shiny... it just seems 'over-dressed'. Not particularly fond of light and heat bouncing around either, in summer, and falling/slipping is a real issue. I'm not best buddies with a fully matte tile, either, cleaning is a thing - I've always gone for that in-between, satin type, but with a really top notch wear rating and non-slip rating. Everyone I know with glossy tiles has had near misses, and actual accidents with falls, slipping, and skidding, and regrets it - I had to have them in a place we rented once, and hated them with a passion. I skidded a bit on a spot of water, while carrying laundry, and nearly put a hole in the gyprock with my head. Not a pleasant experience. No easier to clean than a good satin finish tile IMO. I don't really understand the common perception that bling is more fancy. I've always thought, "the less gloss, the more elegant and expensive", but that's just me. What look are you going for? Maybe the style of the house should speak to you. I'm having a more 'New England' style where gloss is out of place. Some of the more ultra moderns have either very gloss, or very matte. Depends what you like, and if you don't mind the upkeep. Also depends on the colour, I'd say. A mid to light floor shows less dust and marks than a very dark one. Also depends if you're a 'form over function', or 'function over form', person. Have you lived with both types of tile, before? I've seen places where gloss looks very good, and very in keeping with the style. I just personally shy away, from preference. The floors only stay clean for approximately 5 seconds with kids, even when they get older! Re: Tiles - Gloss or Matte??? 8Aug 08, 2017 11:50 am I am a fan of matte, I think it hides more, however gloss is easier to clean. We chose matt originally but when that was discontinued we chose lappato. The tile we chose came in matt but it seemed a little bit textured and based on previous experience that scared me off.
