If you are, then an ikea kitchen is fine. The overhead cupboards are difficult (impossible) to install on timber/steel framed walls Otherwise, If you are planning on staying in the house for more than 2 years, then you will be wasting a lot of good money. Its possible to get exactly the same thing at a simular price locally. We are installing IKEA kitchen right now. We have had part of the kitchen installed 8 years ago. We hang the over head cabinets without doors as a temporary measure until DH was ready for the reno. They are still fine, no peeling or dmamge, so we are reusing them. Now to the advantages, * it is still cheaper than the best priced local manufacturer, * if you are installing it yourself you have better control with the design. I have changed my mind numerous times and it was just a trip to IKEA, return their stuff and get something different * I like their design much better that most what is on offer locally. We have chosen Nexus birch doors for the bottom and Avsikt for the overheads. I am having mostly drawers as it is a design for "old age" or as it is nicely put on some internet sites for retirenment. So far for 6 60cm drawer units with Blum soft close runners, overheads galore, two Utby steel benches and a buffet consisting of 9 cabinets we have paid under $5K, which is way less than whatever we were quoted locally. You will be able to see the first pics in the general thread. Just a word of caution, do not use painted IKEA doors, they are poor quality and tend to crack. For more info google IKEAFANS there is a lot there. Maggie Re: Ikea Kitchen - what type 4Aug 19, 2008 10:17 pm Our Ikea kitchen has not lasted well. We installed it about four years ago and whilst most of the cabinets are still ok, a few of them have warped and peeled.
We went for the cheapest doors as we were only supposed ot be here for two years while we saved and built Re: Ikea Kitchen - what type 5Aug 20, 2008 9:21 am maggie Just a word of caution, do not use painted IKEA doors, they are poor quality and tend to crack. I think it is quite good, best part is it deals with all the problems arising when you are putting IkEA furniture together . We have just a few so far, cracked backing of the wall cabinet, wrongly screwed hinge (one of the adjusting screws has the head inside the hinge instead of outside ). I have only a 15 min drive to the store but imagine that you have to drive 4 hours!!!! It would drive me nuts .
I also like the design section where they have plenty of pics showing off their kitchen. The mob there is mostly from US. Maggie Thanks 7Aug 20, 2008 7:46 pm thank you all for your input. I will take in all on board and decide. We will be selling but not probably for a few years so perhaps we will go the alternative way and look for someone local. I appreciate the time you spent on posting your comments. Cheers Natural stone tiles like slate, travertine, and limestone add a timeless, elegant look to… 0 25600 2 4197 No. It's not original.
