Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 02, 2017 7:37 pm Hi All Doing our kitchen reno and time to choose the splash back and bench tops. All cupboard doors are high gloss white vinyl wrap and no handles (push open) Been to and spoken to a number of stone places for bench tops and splash backs. Looking at engineered stone (ie ceaserstone, stone ambassodor etc...) Been told bench tops should be atleast 12mm thick yet I know a stone mason who uses 6mm bench tops without any issue. Any comments on this? Im concerned 20mm thick stone may be too heavy for the current kitchen cupboard carcasses. Like the look of under mount sinks but were told after a couple of years the silicon absorbs the sink odours and starts smelling. Any one come across this? Finally everyone except one company says a stone splash back needs 200mm clearance from the edge of the back burner of a gas cooktop. One company says their stone is heat treated and only needs 65mm. This stone is quartzstone 12 - 12mm think engineered stone. Any comments on this? Thanks for you help Built The Huntley 290 with HomeXcellance / Cheviot Homes Re: bench top and splash back 2May 03, 2017 7:34 am Do it once do it right!! All stone should be a minimum of 20mm thick. Anything thinner and your just getting a cheap and nasty tops! Why do you think your existing cabinets wouldn't support the weight? I haven't seen a kitchen yet that couldn't support 20mm. It really depends on the cooktop your using. Some bunners are very close to the outside edge and could cause issues but some cooktops have the buners set in enough where 65mm wouldn't be a problem. "Silicon absorbs the sink odours and starts smelling" who did you hear this from? Stop talking and listening to them now! I wouldn't have anything other than an undermount in my kitchen. They are amazing and so much better than a top mount bowl. have you considered the amount of grime and mould that can and does accumulate under the lip of a top mount bowl?
