Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 12, 2008 8:25 pm Has anybody put in or plan to put in lighting under their overhead cupboards? I think it looks great in the display homes but not sure which way to go or when to do it (ie: before or after hand over) options are:
1/ Recessed down lights (but worried about the heat factor) 2/ Surface mouned down lights (but again the heat factor) 3/ LED rope lights or individual lights 4/ Mini fluoro tubes (think they may also be called pen lights) Any ideas or feedback from your experiences would be great. Thanks in advance Re: Under cupboard lighting? 2Aug 12, 2008 8:27 pm snhouse 4/ Mini fluoro tubes (think they may also be called pen lights) My favourites. I DO like the look of them , though! We saw it on display, and juat asked for what they'd done there, didn't really think about the other options you mentioned. Any particular brand, Michelle ? But fluoro lighting is sold by all lighting suppliers…..so this type of light is the mini version. Crompton and other well know companies should put one out, check with your electrician. By the way, I like a fluoro for the kitchen under cupboards, it’s a crisp light. Crompton especially has the mini fluro tubes.
http://www.crompton.com.au/default.php http://www.onlinelighting.com.au/ Its hard enough to decide what type to get, then you have to decide how to wire them up ie: have them come on with the other kitchen lights or on a separate switch. Think if you had them on a separate switch the novelty would wear off after a while and you wouldn't bother turning them on. Re: Under cupboard lighting? 7Aug 15, 2008 11:36 pm We went with seperate switches adn the novelty hasnt worn off...
We use them a lot. We cooking they are on entertaining, mood lighting or just to make the kitchen *sparkle* they look good! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I would recommend them as the lights are generally behind and above you and as soon as you go to where the workspace is you block out the light with your own body! Re: Under cupboard lighting? 11Aug 20, 2008 7:39 pm I had fluoro tubes 33years ago in my first apartment. Though I still like them DH refuses to have them again , with the next kitchen I had nothing until we got a rangehood which had down lights inbuilt so now in the new kitchen I am having lights galore and I know I will be using them a lot. The will be IKEA steel boxes with thre halogen lights, I am having three sets.
Maggie Re: Under cupboard lighting? 13Aug 22, 2008 2:17 pm Check out Lincoln sentry and their Hera lighting options- everything from halogens to Low voltage, low or no heat L.E.D solutions.
Also worth a look is Hafele for their modular low voltage offerings and decorative lighting. These two ranges are designed specifically with kitchens in mind. The most popular options now are micro L.E.D. flush mounted to cabinet undersides as the old halogen type required false bottoms to cabinets whereas these are a lower profile surface mount. Go for daylight slimline fluoro's if mainly for practical working light or for LED's if more for decorative effect (both if required). Hi kitchendesigner, are any of these light fittings able to be retro-fitted?
