Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 12, 2008 12:04 pm Hello Everyone,
This is my first post- but seeing all the great advice that i got from this forum, i thought it would be a good idea to get yout opinions on this kitchen. We've recently purchased a small condo with fairly decent kitchen. It has neutral white cabinets, silver handles, gray laminate countertop and white tiles. It looks very neutral and nice, but i wanted some pop of colour, so we're thinking of creating an orange glass tile backsplash. My questions is: would you recommend painting the outside of the bar a shade from the glass mosaic (a shade of orange)? If i do that, i am considering painting the bedroom a similar colour (since you could see into the bedroom if the door is open from the kitchen) to create some flow. For the open concept living room, i am considering a warm colour (a shade of yellow). For the rest of the house we are putting dark brown laminate floor. Please let me know what you think- i really appreciate all the great advice. Also, if anyone thinks of any other small budget-impactful ideas, i would appreciate it! I'm biased though as I'm having an orange back panel on my island bench!!
Why not paint the back panel of the bench the light orange from the tile and the bedroom the darker orange? Then you could add little accessories in the the two tones. Like a throw on the couch or cushions on the bed. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I am not sure what our colour consultant will say, but I think that outside the bar would be quite nice to have one of those colours from your tiles, however, I would not paint the bedroom the same colour. I would keep it nice, light a soothing, if you paint it a hot shade it will energise you too much and some people say that it interupts the sleep. Quite frankly I would keep the rest of the house just white and add splashes of colour whith cushions, pictures and that sort of thing. You can change them according to the season or your fancy. I do that, I have very warm dark red/orange/rusty colours in winter and lime green in summer. I change the rug, cushions, throw ruggs and voila you have a whole new room. Mggie Re: Excited new homeowner seeking advise 4Aug 12, 2008 12:28 pm I would definately do the splashback but I would wait until the laminate is down before painting. You might find you will need the lighter orange to compliment the floor and lift your eyes to a specific wall.
The wall next to the breakfast bench looks like it could be good. Another idea is that you can paint a square or rectangle of colour on the wall rather than the whole wall almost creating a picture effect approx 1/3 of the wall. This could also link in with your mosaic. You would need to create the right sized square or rectangle to suit the wall though. This can also be used above your bed. It would also help you decide what colour you want to take into the living. I would keep the breakfast bench wall white it helps the orange pop and use a nice vase or an accessorie to compliment the colour in the kitchen. Even and orange seated bar stool. Few ideas, what a great happy colour. Re: Excited new homeowner seeking advise 5Aug 12, 2008 1:10 pm Wow- what great response!
Since it is almost 11pm here, i probably would a whole new day to analyze all your responses! I think it is a good idea to wait with painting the bar until the floors are down- it will definitely drive the choice for my colours. I am not a big fan of white walls since I've lived pretty much my whole life with white walls (at my parents' house- although my bedroom now is a popping orange, and it makes me happy everytime i wake up! ) Plus, paint is an easy fix Thanks for all the great responses! Re: Excited new homeowner seeking advise 7Aug 12, 2008 10:47 pm Definitely go the orange splash and maybe a darker shade of orange for the bedroom.
It might be nice to add another accent colour into your decor such as red, yellow or even ... pink. I'm looking straight at my fruit bowl atm which is filled with orange mandarins, green avocados and one or two lemons. Gorgeous. Re: Excited new homeowner seeking advise 8Aug 13, 2008 12:30 am Thanks DeeElle! I was actually thinking of doing yellow tones in the living room and then adding red accents throughout the room.
It seems that my pics are not showing up... I am trying Michelle's advice on how to post photos. Hopefully it will work this time: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ After previewing: They are a little small, but i guess better than nothing!
