Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 08, 2008 11:46 am our fridge is 890mm wide, and the fridge space in the kitchen is 944mm.
so its going to fit with about 25mm either side. This is about half of the recommended space to leave - what will this mean as regards the normal functioning of the fridge? The space behind the fridge is fine there will easily be enough room for the recommended space Is there such a thing as having too much of a gap behind the fridge? It doesnt have exposed coils etc. Building in manor lakes 2008 Re: gaps at rear and side of fridge 2Aug 08, 2008 11:59 am The space around the fridge is for circulation of air. If the gap is too small - air won't circulate enough and it may get hot around the fridge. This will make the fridge work harder and use more electricity to keep cool. After 4 years - we're in! Re: gaps at rear and side of fridge 4Aug 09, 2008 6:13 pm What IS the recommended space on either side??
I hadn't even thought of that, but obviously you need gaps for air and to keep the fridge cool. It's the same with anything, TVs, etc. I hate the look of messy gaps though...what is the minimum recommended space needed for a fridge to operate safely and efficiently for a long time? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: gaps at rear and side of fridge 5Aug 09, 2008 6:17 pm grace_slick What IS the recommended space on either side?? It's different for every fridge. You need to get on the website for the relevant fridge and find out the recommendations. But in general it's about 5cm either side I think. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: gaps at rear and side of fridge 6Aug 09, 2008 7:02 pm Oh, is that all!? 5cm? That's fine then! I misread the original post and thought it said 25cm, and I was like SURELY 25CM IS ENOUGH! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: gaps at rear and side of fridge 7Aug 09, 2008 7:46 pm The problem with not much space on the sides is, if you want a flush front door with cabinetry, you can't fully open the doors.
Space behind the fridge and venting above the space behind the fridge it is important for ventilation/cooling. I wouldn't worry about the sides for ventilation/cooling. Our kitchen is very sort of...built in. Meaning, all the cupboards and oven and microwave are all built in amongst each other. There are cupboards all around the oven, microwave and fridge, with cupboards above them as well. I love this look, but how do you sort of...get to the powerpoint for both the microwave and fridge in these types of fridges??? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: gaps at rear and side of fridge 9Aug 09, 2008 8:56 pm Ours is a bit like this too. The only way is to move the fridge or microwave out of the way...a bit of a pain, but I can't see any other way.

Well, I guess the fridge, once installed, won't be needing to ever be unplugged, so that shouldn't be a problem...
The microwave I guess too...although we like to turn things (like the microwave we don't use everyday) off at the wall to save power and for safety and stuff...I actually can't see how we even can remove it from its alcove, but there must be a way. There must! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: gaps at rear and side of fridge 11Aug 09, 2008 9:08 pm I know what you mean. Our microwave actually plugs in behind our fridge so to turn it off we have to move the fridge a bit.
Depending on how tight the space is, you could plug them into a powerboard with switches, and have the power board in the gap next to the fridge/microwave so you can reach the switch. Not a very attractive solution. A year or two ago, I saw this thing on The New Inventors, that was just a switch on a power cord, which was designed to solve this sort of problem. Don't know what it was called or if it was ever manufactured, but it would be good. I like the sound of that power switch thing on the cord. That'd be good. Probably not invented though, darn it! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Space behind the fridge and venting above the space behind the fridge it is important for ventilation/cooling. I wouldn't worry about the sides for ventilation/cooling. I'd have to disagree here. In our rental the fridge space is 90cm. Our fridge width is 90cm. We actually had to squeeze the fridge in and put it on blocks to get above the skirting board. The sides of the fridge get very hot - so hot that on high temp days the pantry in the next cupboard gets very hot. I opened the pantry once and got a gust of hot air like you'd expect out of a heater! Our electricity use by the fridge is up about 12% as well compared to when it used to be in a 100cm space. After 4 years - we're in! Re: gaps at rear and side of fridge 14Aug 10, 2008 9:02 pm ok, i rang electrolux and spoke to the CSR.
She asked me about the space behind and above the fridge as well as at the sides, and said that they additional space we have will compensate for the lack of space at the sides, and that the cooling element in the model we are getting is at the back of the fridge. We're still going to try to get the gap made wider, even though the frame is done, as I've just figured out they've put a window in at the wrong height, which will make the kitchen cupboards 2cm lower than they should be, so they're going to have to redo all of that as well. Which will be fun now all the bricks are done. I'm glad we have tons left over. Building in manor lakes 2008 I would suggest get legal representation.
