Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 06, 2008 8:35 am Found this forum yesterday - am looking for some advice please from a first time kitchen purchaser.
I signed up for my new kitchen last week, including poly doors, stone bench, glass splash etc. Yesterday the kitchen sales guy rang me and asked whether I wanted the inside of my frost glass doors to be painted? Also whether the underside of my cupboards that hang above the bench should be painted as when I sit at my kitchen table I will see while melamine (?sp) under the cupboards instead of the colour. What is normal in this situation? He claims that maybe 1 in a 100 ask to have it painted. Opinions gratefully received. Cheers, John Re: How much of the cupboard do you paint in poly? 2Aug 06, 2008 9:45 am Jda, it is really a personal choice, personally I would not bother. Are you worried that you would see a bit of white when you are sitting at the table? For me a question would be will this paint stay there, if it is under the cupboards the heat and humidity under them might cause the paint to peel.
Maggie Re: How much of the cupboard do you paint in poly? 3Aug 06, 2008 9:46 am If you're willing to spend the bit extra to have it done, then I don't see any issues with it. They're nice finishing touches and if it's not too much extra then why not. For our kitchen, it was not a big deal as we have minimal overhead cupboards and the cupboards are white anyway.
As far as I know it is fairly common for the underside of the overhead cupboards to be plain white melamine. Re: How much of the cupboard do you paint in poly? 4Aug 06, 2008 10:50 am What colour are the doors and boards being painted?
If it is a lightish colour (cream - white - grey) you may well not notice it. If there are darker doors, especially feature colours this may be worth considering. I would be giving the consultant points in any case for checking with you and giving you the option. The doors will be a pale colour, e.g. Antique white or Parchment so will probably not notice the underneath. How about inside the doors? Where does the paint finish normally end? On the front edge, the inside edge, or inside?
thanks, John Re: How much of the cupboard do you paint in poly? 6Aug 06, 2008 1:09 pm The paint on doors normally finishes on the inside edge.
On top of that, the boards that the painted doors are cut from will (should) be painted on both sides with a satin white prep layer that is good enough for the inside of any door. From the sound of your colour selection you should not need to get too bent out of shape about matching the "non face" areas.
