Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 19, 2016 11:07 am We are currently designing our kitchen and previously planned on having 40mm stone throughout the kitchen and 20mm stone only in the walk in pantry. We are going 2pack handleless (sharknose) white cabinetry with silestone lagoon stone on all benchtops/island. My concern is that having 40mm all around is starting to look a bit dated and thought perhaps it might look better if we go 20mm on all benchtops except the island bench where it would be 40mm. I figured this might make the island look like more of a feature. Whats everyones thoughts on this? attached is a sketchup of how the kitchen would look with 40mm everywhere except in the WIP. Don't worry about fashions or what's in at the minute, it will be out tomorrow replaced with something different. Just build your kitchen to your tastes. I actually like the look of 60-80mm thick bench tops especially for an island unit! I wouldn't have minded the thicker stone but wasn't willing to pay for it and I think the 20mm has ended up quite nice. I like what you have come up with though My blog: tashandpaul.wordpress.com Re: Kitchen design question (stone thickness) 5Aug 19, 2016 8:17 pm We went with 40mm on island and 20mm on other benches. Love the look of our island and so glad we did but of course it all comes down to personal preference and budget. I like a thick benchtop. I was going laminate or 40mm stone. I don't think thick will every go out of style per say. Re: Kitchen design question (stone thickness) 12Sep 27, 2016 8:32 pm I think the thicker the better, especially the island but comes down to budget in my case, and fortunately was able to get 40mm to rear and island as a promo when signed up. Go for what makes you happy:) Re: Kitchen design question (stone thickness) 13Sep 28, 2016 12:23 pm I think it depends on your kitchen/house style. I'm going for 20mm everywhere...no waterfall edges. I love the European kitchens with their thin countertops...thinner the better for me! Re: Kitchen design question (stone thickness) 15Oct 14, 2016 4:39 pm Gorey, 20mm stone is typically used by clients who are tight for budget, hence better finished (generally) have 40mm+ tops. If you interested in seeing how varoius 20mm and 40mm tops can be finished check out http://www.homeone.com.au/articles/bathroom/101_kitchen_amp_bathroom_design_ideas_free Good luck! Richard@themakeovergroup Re: Kitchen design question (stone thickness) 16Oct 16, 2016 3:16 pm I'm having 20, prefer the thinner look... I did read somewhere the new trend coming from Europe is even thinner like 12mm. But go with what you like, you have to live with it. Re: Kitchen design question (stone thickness) 17Oct 16, 2016 10:57 pm To each his own. Depends on your budget too. The stones come in different category and prices. It is more expensive for 40mm. 20mm or 40mm stone will still chip if you are not careful . Re: Kitchen design question (stone thickness) 18Oct 17, 2016 4:17 pm Thanks for the feedback everyone. It certainly seems everyone has a different opinion on this. I'll most likely stick with 40mm all around but who knows, I seem to change my mind weekly on this stuff. Re: Kitchen design question (stone thickness) 19Oct 17, 2016 4:48 pm I'm having 40mm for the main island bench in kitchen, the back benches will be 20mm and the bathroom/ensuite and powder rooms will all be 20mm as well. Personally i love the 40mm but if you think about it the benchtop itself is not 40mm completely, it's around the edges so you're paying heaps of money for something so small... unless my builder is cutting cost and being shifty with me!
