If you also have a small container with vege and fruit scraps that you empty into a compost heap you need to have a lid on it and empty it every day. When I was overseas on holidays earlier this year the resort had a mat on the bench that was a sticky sheet and when flies landed on it they got stuck. It kept the whole area under control.
