Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 03, 2008 7:52 am We're in the process of buying a house which has a pretty small kitchen. One of the options put forward to us was to lose the 'laundry' as such and just put the washing machine and dryer behind sliding doors. This would give us a much bigger kitchen but I'm struggling to picture this 'sliding door laundry'. Has anyone here done this and if so do you have any photos you could show me please? Heres the plans as the house is now to give you more of an idea of what I mean. The other alternative is to extend and move the laundry outside (lots of money!) but this could be a good alternative for us.

My sister has a laundry behind bifold doors, she did what you did - extended her kitchen into her laundry. She finds is OK. It would have to be compact and you would have to allow for a washing basket. The best thing to put there would be a stacker washer and dryer, youd save lots of space! If you dont need a big laundry, check out this link.... the laundries are in the kitchens, you can incorparate something like it.

It's what we have in our design. It's always worked well for her.
It's something that's quite common in European and English houses, so maybe a website from there would give you some ideas. Judie Re: Laundry behind sliding doors to make kitchen bigger 8Aug 04, 2008 6:33 am Thanks for that - was hoping the man would come with it though
Yep, I'm British (been in Oz for 2 1/2 years), and having a Laundry is only for the 'posh' houses!! lol I've got two concerns with having them in the kitchen though - first the noise as it'd be only plan living, dining, kitchen - and secondly the resale value. Do you think it would put buyers off if there wasnt a Laundry? Thanks again Re: Laundry behind sliding doors to make kitchen bigger 9Aug 04, 2008 8:19 am tygwyn and secondly the resale value. Do you think it would put buyers off if there wasnt a Laundry? Thanks again That is a very personal choice - It would put me off but maybe not the next person. Paula Re: Laundry behind sliding doors to make kitchen bigger 10Aug 04, 2008 8:39 am Although I prefer a separate laundry myself, I don't think it will be a problem for re-sale value, these 'mini laundries' behind bifold doors and similar are becoming more common, especially in units and smaller houses.
From a resale point of view you have to weigh up the possible down side of not haveing a separate laundry with the big up side of haveing a larger renovated kitchen. My brother and SIL have a house in which the laundry is an extension of the kitchen, no separate door, they have lived in house for around 10 years, not a problem for them. SIL is from England too, so this is the norm that she was used to before comeing to Australia. I have also seen many older houses which have an outside laundry in a detached outhouse, there are many of these around here, built around 50 yrs ago. Our own house, built in 1959, has the laundry on the back porch ( umr and now enclosed) One other point: I do think that retractable shelf, as shown in TDL's picture, is a really good idea for laundries that don't have bench space. Re: Laundry behind sliding doors to make kitchen bigger 12Aug 04, 2008 11:30 am tygwyn I've got two concerns with having them in the kitchen though - first the noise as it'd be only plan living, dining, kitchen - and secondly the resale value. Do you think it would put buyers off if there wasnt a Laundry? It would put me off ... precisely because of the noise factor. We have the dryer in the kitchen in our present place and it's a real turn off. If you are going to do this, you might need ducting for the dryer as well as acoustic insulation in the doors to minimize the noise. Brilliant!!! yep thats the normal set up for UK houses - there just isn't the space in most houses for a separate laundry. Thanks for all your responses - definitely food for thought!
