Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 02, 2008 6:39 pm Hellooo
We're looking to buy a new fridge soon (our old one is about 15 years of age and though it still works, it's been on its last legs for quite a while. It constantly accumulates huge ice bergs in the back of the fridge behind the food, and in Summer here drips out from the bottom cause it's too hard for it to function effectively). Anyway, we're looking at buying from either The Good Guys or Harvey Norman (I get discounts from there through my work, heheh), and we went to The Good Guys today and found 4 fridges we really liked. 2 are LG, one is Westinghouse and the other is Samsung. Are these good? I've heard someone say once Westinghouse sucks, and yet I actually thought it was one of the better fridge brands! Oh, and how do you get that hideous and intense new fridge smell out of the fridge ASAP!? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: What's your preferred brand of fridge? 2Aug 02, 2008 6:44 pm Grace,
Have you seen this thread; https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=8017 I've heard that vinegar or vanilla removes smells from fridges and I guess it would also work for new fridge. Cheers, Casa Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: What's your preferred brand of fridge? 3Aug 02, 2008 8:28 pm Cool, thanks for that, Casa! I don't much care for vinegar, but vanilla's delicious! lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: What's your preferred brand of fridge? 4Aug 02, 2008 9:07 pm I love Samsung - but I'm biased
As for the vanilla - you can get vanilla fridge spray from the supermarket in with the cleaners. Its smells delicious - my kids have even asked if I'd been making muffins!! Paula Re: What's your preferred brand of fridge? 5Aug 02, 2008 9:19 pm My favourite fridge would be one that works. Properly other than that... whatever.. Actually that's not entirely true. DH bought our current fridge without me and it's too tall. We keep certain items on top of our fridge and I can't reach them without standing on a chair. I also hate that it opens the wrong way. Well I think it's the wrong way for our kitchen. It's called 'McLintock's Vanilla Fresh Fridge Wipe and Deodoriser' (just checked in the cupboard ) Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: What's your preferred brand of fridge? 7Aug 03, 2008 2:21 pm Cool, we'll definitely get some of that stuff! Where'd you buy it from? How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: What's your preferred brand of fridge? 9Aug 07, 2008 7:42 pm I used to sell fridges for a reputable company and i must admit westinghouse make a pretty good unit.
They are still made in Orange, NSW (the larger than 200 litre models are) We used to sell twice as much as other brands. As far as others go, they are still a working fridge but these are some things i found to be prone to each company Fisher and Paykel - seals are very loose and door suction is very tight = tearing seals. On a good note, the Active Smart system makes servicing alot quicker, all it takes is a laptop and cables, plug it in and it will tell the service guys whats wrong-clever huh! Im wasnt a fan of Samsung and LG when they first came out as there computer chips were forever malfunctioning and they felt like plastic. However LG have improved the look and feel of there units and the service side has improved immensely. Samsung, i have to say, should stick to TV's, cheap and nasty! Other brands like electrolux are great if you have the money, the same goes for Maytag, Gaggenau, Jenn Air etc... but the advantage of these are they generally have the ventillation vents at the front of the unit so they can be built in, unlike our aussie fridges which have the condensors at the back. Either way, when you look at fridges you will have to expect a life expectancy of about 7-10 years, so look at how cost effective this will be over this time and also the size of the unit. If you have or due to have a family then a two door or upside down configuration is best. If its just the two of you then buy the approrpriate size and treat yourself on added luxuries:) Hope this gives a little insight Kitchens are like finger prints, no two are ever the same!! SmartPack did the kitchens for Channel 9's Home Made TV Show Re: What's your preferred brand of fridge? 11Aug 08, 2008 9:40 am One more opinion, we bought an Electrolux 18months ago. I think DH was seduced by 12 bottles of Petaluma wine that went with it, . i wanted a smaller, narrower fridge, he wanted the biggest ,hm. In the end I regret this frindge, though the wine was beautiful, the door is way to wide to be comfortable to use and the insides are very poorly designed. I do not know the other fridges but when the kids were still at home we had a Westinghouse, side by side for 20 years, it was great until it caught fire !!!! through some electrical fault, lucky I have a good sence of smell and that it did not happen during the night.
Maggie Re: What's your preferred brand of fridge? 13Aug 08, 2008 10:14 am Casa2 I've heard that vinegar or vanilla removes smells from fridges and I guess it would also work for new fridge. Another good idea is to have an open container with bicarb soda in it. It absorbs all the odours but doesn't give off any smells. The fridge remains neutral. It just has to be changed when it starts to go lumpy. About once a month. Very cheap option as well. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I hate this door it is so wide that I have to move furniture to open the *&^^#* fridge!!!!!
I wish..... to late now for the next 10 or 20 years DH will never aggree to trade it in... sigh... Maggie Thank you. That is really helpful. Once we get the place done and passed for OC we can upgrade in the future once we get back on our feet and not paying mortgage and rent. 4 5713 I had a similar issue with my fridge not too long ago. It wasn't the same model, but the symptoms were pretty much the same: the compressor would start and then stop… 3 7522 Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive). Would require a mini… 13 39469 |
