Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 23, 2016 4:17 pm Thinking of using a whole stone slab for my kitchen island which would make it 3000 x 1500. Not sure if 1500 deep is going to look too big, and whetger to go for 1200. Has anyone got any pics of deep islands like this with measurements so i can get a feel for the look.☺ Re: Anybody used a whole stone slab for their island? 2Jun 23, 2016 5:09 pm I would go for 1200 deep makes it a bit easier to clean from one side. I think 1500 will be too big imo Re: Anybody used a whole stone slab for their island? 3Jul 01, 2016 10:07 pm Hi, We have just moved into our new home and have a large kitchen island bench. It measures 3m in length x 1.35m wide and I find it's a great size, big enough for food prep on one side and to have seating on the other. I can't reach over the whole bench to clean it but I don't mind. I think 1.5m wide would be too big but it's personal choice. Some stone suppliers will only guarantee an OH of 300-400mm unless you either go up a thickness of stone or have some sort of support under the OH both of which would add quite a bit to the cost. It depends a lot on the stone you use too of course. Stewie Re: Anybody used a whole stone slab for their island? 5Jul 02, 2016 9:17 am Hi. We have 1050 wide with an overhang of 350mm. It's perfect width. I have to clean it from both sides as its too wide to wipe properly from one side without marking the edge of the stone with Jean buttons / buckles etc. My stone mason has been in the industry for 30 years and told me up to 20% of stone cracks due to being too big unsupported. He wisely even talked me out of my waterfall edges due to risk of them cracking. There are some images of my bench on my thread if you're interested. Im having cabinetry the other side of the island for the support, not as deep so that there is a 300mm overhang. It would be a shame to waste the storage space by just having a panel.
