Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 24, 2016 4:40 am My husband and I were sniffing around like crazy people trying to find the bad odour in our (new) kitchen. We were shocked when we found it was the Ceasarstone bench top. I disinfect and nuke my dish/cleaning cloths (Chux) in the microwave and use mild soapy water to clean the bench. I don't understand why this smell is coming from the stone. It's a sour putrid smell. Very scary. Has anyone else found this? What/why is it and how can I eradicate it please? Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 2May 24, 2016 7:24 am Oh wow, I've never heard of that before, that's not what you'd expect at all. I just googled it and it looks like others have had the same problem with Granite but have suggested that it's the seal around the sink, is that possible in your case? Hope it can be sorted coz that's the sort of thing that would bug the hell out of me Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 3May 24, 2016 9:29 am Thanks Marsh. It was on the flat stone slab. We thought maybe it was some residual bacteria. And cleaned it all down with metho. But it's come back two days later. I've never had that with Laminex or any kitchen surface ??? We chose the stone because we thought it would be more hygienic. ? Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 4May 24, 2016 9:32 am Odd one. I know the dishwasher can smell at times. I didn't know this could happen. Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 5May 24, 2016 4:17 pm Hi TomCat, Caesarstone is virtually non porous, so not sure if the odour could be coming from your stone? Sometimes when there is a gap between the time your old kitchen is pulled out and your plumbing is reconnected in the new kitchen, you may get an odour coming from the waste pipe. Could it be from that? With 25 years kitchen experience and a passion for what I do, I have joined this forum to offer advice or at least my opinion on all things relevant to kitchens. I was a cabinetmaker by trade and am now a senior manager of a kitchen company. Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 6May 24, 2016 10:25 pm Thanks Kitchenpro. It's a new house. We thought it was coming from the waste pipe at first, but sniffing all around it, worked out it wasn't. We thought it couldn't be the stone because it seems non porous. But the smell was definitely on the flat surface of the stone. When we look at the stone with lights reflecting on it at a certain angle, it looks shiney with slight crazes around each stone 'chip'. We wonder whether it's those crazes that are trapping moisture (?) Really need a microscope. We'll keep our eyes/noses on it. Still not sure what's going on. It's only twice we've picked this up. We've been in our home temporarily for only four months. Thanks again for your interest. If we work out what is actually happening, I'll update this post. Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 8May 25, 2016 6:39 am My bench doesn't smell but I've only used it for 6 days haha Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 9May 25, 2016 7:17 pm Let's hope it doesn't Kylie ![]() ![]() Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 10May 25, 2016 8:21 pm Thanks we love it! But still landscaping to do, so all beautiful inside and mudpit outside haha. Plus both neighbours are building, so trades are here from the crack of dawn till dusk. Who knew they work so hard Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 11Jun 30, 2016 3:02 pm Is it still smelling, Tomcat? Did you kill the smell? I must have missed that in your build topic.... I'm guessing you wiped with vinegar and all the other usual suspects as well? Your post came up when I searched my suspicion: "stone bench top smells bad". Did you ever determine if stone was the issue for sure? Did you fix it? Any update would be HUGELY appreciated. Re: Bad odour from stone bench top 13Jun 27, 2020 4:00 pm I first would open up a drawer and look for printing on the underside of the stone slap. Each Ceasarstone has printing underneath, a) Ceasarstone, b) the colour name and c) manufacturing code. The code tells Ceasarstone which charge ir was made off in case that something goes wrong or someone needs an additional slap. If printing is missing than you don't have a Ceasarstone slap.
