Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 29, 2008 6:24 pm We're looking at updating our kitchen, but with our current measurements we will have to go with a custom kitchen (which is not an option) or move a wall!
I'm wondering if anyone knows of the best way (and if it is possible) to cut the high gloss foil kitchen cabinets?? (we need to remove about 2 cms in width) We're currently looking at the Ikea high gloss 'Abstrakt' doors. Will is be prone to chipping like a laminate cabinet? Will taping along the cut negate this? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Kate Re: customising 'off the shelf' cabinets 2Jul 29, 2008 6:44 pm Hi Kate,
There is always some damaged stuff in the AS IS department in IKEA, you can pick cheap doors, I found some for $5 in the past, and practice on those you will know whther it is viable option. If you are handy it might be an option. Have a look at Ikeafans forum, you might find more answers there. http://www.ikeafans.com/forums/plan-design/ Maggie Re: customising 'off the shelf' cabinets 4Jul 29, 2008 8:42 pm What are you thinking of finishing the cut edge with?
My concern is that you will have two very different looking edge treatments - along with a difference in the profile routed around the face. The only time we have cut vinyl doors down is when we fitted extruded aluminium handles along the entire cut edge. We used a panel saw and there was no tear out. Have you investigated getting some made to measure un-assembled cabinets locally made? They have been in 3 years and now need replacing.
