Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 19, 2016 12:51 pm We are just about to sign contracts and I keep thinking over my kitchen design and whether I should increase the width of our island bench...please help me decide! It's my last chance to change it if I want to! Do you think a width of 1100mm instead of 900mm would look better and more functional since it has the sink on it?. It's 2300mm in length so not very long. My only concern is that when you widen it it will be not in line with the fridge cavity finishing or might look out of proportion to the length?? Thoughts? Here is the plan as it is now. Only difference is the sink will be undermount. Keen top hear everyone's opinion Re: My island bench width?? 2Mar 19, 2016 7:15 pm If you can change it without the change costing you a ridiculous amount of money then I would change it as the width will be more functional than 900mm. You probably would never regret going bigger but may regret keeping it smaller once you start using they kitchen. I wouldn't worry about it lining up with the fridge space as such. Push the width back in to the gap between the island and your rear bench - 1200mm is alot of space, you could afford to lose 200mm from there. I'll grab a pic of my plans and see if i can find a pic that shows you my island. It's 2.9 x 1.4 and i pushed it out of line with with fridge space and i think it looks fine. Hope that helps somehow Re: My island bench width?? 3Mar 20, 2016 9:29 am You have plenty of space around your island, for me, I would increase the width and length (as much as you can afford). You will never regret a bigger island. It absolutely doesn't matter if it lines up with the fridge cavity. If it was my home, I would increase it to 3000x1200. Seems like you have the room to go into your dining space a bit. Re: My island bench width?? 4Mar 20, 2016 9:50 am If you are intending to have chairs under the overhang so you really can use that area as a breakfast bar then the overhang should be a minimum of 350mm. 400mm or larger preferably. I've sat at a few where the overhang was only 300mm and my knees hit the back of the cupboards and I am just under 6'. I don't want any extra cupboards at the side or anything so I'm thinking that's all I can do? Re: My island bench width?? 6Mar 20, 2016 11:30 am I'd always go wider if it fits OK - looks are important though. A good bench top is really useful. Hope that helps somehow Thanks so much Milby. Yep yours looks really good, not strange at all not lined up. Is your overhang around 300mm? I'm going to ring them on Monday and get the kitchen place to quote it to a width of 1100mm. If it's not too expensive then I'm going for it! I would hate to look at every day and think I should of at least asked the price! Re: My island bench width?? 9Mar 20, 2016 11:53 pm We had same dilemma, i ended up not worrying about where it sat and made it little bit smaller than our previous bench as we couldnt make it wider but we went from 900mmx1500 to 2400x1200 but we have a blank bench no sink and a 600mm gap underneath for knees Re: My island bench width?? 13Mar 29, 2016 2:41 pm lozza81 Stewie D If you are intending to have chairs under the overhang so you really can use that area as a breakfast bar then the overhang should be a minimum of 350mm. 400mm or larger preferably. Mine is 900mm and similar in length to yours. I was due to sign contracts on Sunday so hoping I can change the island width prior to contract. Re: My island bench width?? 15May 11, 2016 10:36 am My bench is 3m x 1.2m with 540mm cupboards at either side of the seating side. That leaves 1.8m for the brekky bar. I think it will be a real squeeze for me to get 4 stools in there but I think if the cupboards were a little narrower the look would not be right. Thanks again for this information.
