Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 31, 2016 10:23 am Our kitchen island will be 4.5 metres long with nothing in it (I.e. no sink). I was going to have Caesarstone but the kitchen designer said the join would look terrible and she's suggested Corian. However, I've now read unfavourable reviews on Corian (scratches) so I'm back to wanting stone. I was thinking if I have a darker stone (either a matte black granite, or maybe a grey Caesarstone) then the join might not be obvious. Does anyone have ideas or opinions? Re: Would you have a join in island benchtop? 2Jan 31, 2016 1:30 pm That's huge! Will be an amazing island! I'd get in touch with caesarstone to see if they can customise your slab? I agree with the designer about the join...I think even a darker colour would still look noticeable. What about a polished concrete slab top? Re: Would you have a join in island benchtop? 3Jan 31, 2016 5:24 pm @deejay.... i've thought about concrete but I don't really like it for our house, and it's not really the look I'm after. What do you think about a join in a rough, unhoned, black granite? Re: Would you have a join in island benchtop? 4Jan 31, 2016 7:28 pm From what I have heard the join is more noticeable with the darker colours than the lighter. We will have a join in our bench top I'm quite nervous to see what it looks like once it's done Re: Would you have a join in island benchtop? 5Jan 31, 2016 8:14 pm kait-e From what I have heard the join is more noticeable with the darker colours than the lighter. We will have a join in our bench top I'm quite nervous to see what it looks like once it's done Is your join in a discreet area? We had a join in the stone in our last house but it was at a corner. It was a light colour Caesarstone and because of a ridge in the join it did look a bit discoloured as dirt got trapped there. I suppose you will always see a join but I'm not convinvced it will look so bad I shouldn't do it! Re: Would you have a join in island benchtop? 6Jan 31, 2016 8:20 pm No it will be right in the middle of the counter as we have a sink and dishwasher down the other end and the join can't be close to them. Our builder had a display of a white caesarstone with a join in it and you could really only see it if you were looking for it however they don't have people cooking and living on it Re: Would you have a join in island benchtop? 7Jan 31, 2016 8:26 pm I still think unless you can get that size it would be noticeable if a join was in it...unless the manufacturer can mimic the granite in the material used to join it? The only tops I've encountered in that size in a continuous length are stainless steel, timber and (don't cringe) laminate! Even concrete the largest I've seen and know of was 4m long...I do envy you though! I can only dream of an island that size...don't give up on corian if they can accommodate, would be my advice. Order a sample and 'test' the crap out of it! Re: Would you have a join in island benchtop? 8Feb 01, 2016 7:33 am deejay08 That's huge! Will be an amazing island! What about a polished concrete slab top? Maximum length CaesarStone comes in is 3000mm Good luck carrying an island top 1000x4500 in one piece! It would be crazy heavy and could easily crack. I am not a fan of Corian, its expensive and I believe there are better products out there. Joins in CaesarStone really come down to the experience and quality of the stone mason. They should be minimal and not that noticeable. Yeah I'd imagine some reinforcement would be needed to the bench base! Not to mention a team of strong blokes to lug it in! Lazandjohn you'll have to post pics of your island when it's done! I'm sure it'll all work out Re: Would you have a join in island benchtop? 12Feb 06, 2016 8:36 am Make sure you have a good mason that has done work like rhia previously. I will also need a joint in island benchtop which is 4.2m long. Just tell the mason you want a mirror finish on the joint so they know that you don't want to see a bad joint. They can do a very good job if they know what they are doing. I too am skeptical though until I see it in place. Lighter colour top may help though.
