Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 20, 2016 1:26 pm Hi...the last kitchen I put in was in the UK where the norm is to go to a kitchen supplier and have them design and supply a kitchen. The more expensive kitchens in the UK are rigid built (is that modular?) and the cheaper ones are flat pack. So, my question is why in Australia do people go for a custom made kitchen? Is it far superior to a German or Italian rigid built kitchen? In the UK the custom made/bespoke kitchens would be very high end (like Smallbone of Devizes).... I am trying to save costs as we will have a big kitchen plus scullery, and also I like Nobilia kitchens.... Re: Modular/rigid built vs custom made 2Jan 20, 2016 11:46 pm The modular kitchens here are typically cheep standardized flat packs made in China. Think ikea kitchens. You can also pick them up at bunnings. Some kitchen companies sell these also with a little more service wrapped around them. The thing is you space has to fit the modules or have some make up section the allow it to adapt a little. Custom kitchens are made to measure. Literally they will come and measure the space prior to making it to you choice of design and choice of finishes and hardware. It is the transported to site and installed. These are more like the rigid built kitchens. A custom built kitchen you are typically looking at $25k+ for a standard sized kitchen. HACK architecture http://Www.hackarchitecture.com.au Thanks...that helps with my understanding. But, do you think a custom made kitchen (obviously made in Australia) is any better (in terms of quality) than kitchens like Rational, Bulthaup? (I'm not going that high end - am looking at Nobilia). I'm okay with having to fit the modules to my kitchen size... Re: Modular/rigid built vs custom made 4Jan 21, 2016 4:31 pm lazandjohn [Thanks...that helps with my understanding. It is a functional space that is reliant good layout and placement of storage in relation to work areas. Allot of this is a very personal thing and need thought through with care. If a modular system gives you the flexibility to achieve this for, then great. The high end kitchens can offer some additional functionality, but mostly where the big money is spent is finishes and often just bigger. Quality hardware will make the kitchen feel a high quality and operate much better for longer, but you can get this in a good modular kitchen. Large draws a very useful and easy to access, but add $$ to a kitchen. I used to work for a couple of bigger modular style kitchen companies years ago and they were very ordinary quality wise. Second rate melamine, plastic legs, poor quality drawer runners and door hinges, large fillers because the cupboards only come in 100mm increments etc. But they were cheap ! Which is why they were so popular. If you were tarting a place up to sell it then maybe but for long term get something custom made.
