Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 14, 2008 9:25 am Help - I need help! Where do you start with colours for kitchen / family / meals rooms? Do we need to think of kitchen colours first, followed by floor, walls, windows treatments etc? I really don't know where to start except to say I like black granite benchtops....... Any direction you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Re: Where do you start colour wise? 2Jul 14, 2008 9:46 am Ok, so you have one element to start with, blak granite. I would go to display homes see where you feel well, which colours apeal to you. Later go to tile places and look at colours you liked in the display homes. The tile shops, showrooms are usually good as they tend to put tiles and othe finishes together, "this goes with that" philosophy .
Colours are very personal and spaces with colours are even more so, you must be happy with the surroundings as you are going to live with them for some time. If you are still absolutely unsure when it is time to choose you can play it safe with neutral shades and colours, warm whites or cool whites dressed up by some beige and later add stronger colours as accents, a coloured dish, pots, clock or the like. Do your research first, have fun and good luck. Maggie Re: Where do you start colour wise? 3Jul 14, 2008 10:10 am Hey welcome to the party.
colours are always a problem arent they???? But u have the colour of your benchtop, black.... Personally with dark benchtop like black i will next choose flooring and flooring will be light because even if the surroundings in your house have a lot of natural night, the dark flooring with black benchtop wont go. so next if you choose flooring then you can work upwards with kitchen doors, splashback etc that match your flooring as well as benchtop. All the best for choosing your colours. I reckon this is the toughest part. Re: Where do you start colour wise? 4Jul 14, 2008 12:46 pm Hi Vegemite, firstly, let me make it quite clear that I consider myself to be colour impaired, lol. The following information is based on advice I have gleaned from this forum and our own building adventure.
We were advised to do the external colours first as these need to be determined before building starts and may need approval from an external agency, in your case, the LDA. Your builder should be able to confirm this or just check your land contract to see if there any covenants. Also knowing your external colours will help you when selecting your internal colours as you need to take into account the flow-through effect of all your colours. It is good that you already know what you want for the kitchen (benchtop at least) as we were advised to start our internal colour selections from the kitchen and then the other wet areas first. As maggie said, go to as many display homes as you can and note the kitchens and other wet areas that you like. We went to all the display homes at Harrison and Forde and then went to Rivoland Tiles (the supplier for pretty much all of the display homes) and told them which kitchens and bathrooms we liked. They were then able to cross-reference their files and show us the tiles used and make some suggestions - surprisingly most of the tiles were close to our allowance I'm assuming your builder doesn't provide a free colour consultant - some do, ours didn't - otherwise you probably wouldn't be asking this question. At the end of the day we were overwhelmed with our external colours and opted to engaged one (the infamous Michelle) and have no regrets - personal choice, of course. Either way try to enjoy it. When doing internal colours for my clients I always start with the kitchen selections first! The kitchen is the hart of the home, so from here all other colours follow. Work your way out….. kitchen / family / meals rooms. When I’m feeling better, I’ll have a better look at your post. I did not even take into account my external selections........we really wanted dark window frames as we are having a two storey home and we felt that the lighter colours yelled out "I'm here look at me" so we went with woodland grey which I love. Now I was aware that we would see w'land grey inside the house but I didn't see that as being an issue until everyone started saying it to me........ The display of our house actually has w/land grey too and it took me about six visits to notice it, maybe that was due to me looking at everything else! Our trims are going to be painted Chalk Dust which is a white so no doubt the windows will stick out.....oh well...... We also had a colour consultant provided by the builder in their showroom and she did absolutely nothing to help us. We said we'd like a white kitchen and she suggested Nocturne Oak.......not anywhere near white! All she kept on saying is "this is my favourite", "this is what is popular" " everyone is having cedar" etc etc. I found the whole internal colour selection very difficult and I thought I knew what I wanted. I wish I had of found this forum earlier, I would have been happy to let everyone give me their opinions and advice and I certainly would have become one of Michelle's clients. Good luck Vegemite, I hope you get through it okay. You are lucky that so many people on this forum will happily give you their ideas. I'll be watching Happy at Home Re: Where do you start colour wise? 7Jul 14, 2008 1:57 pm I honestly have no idea as yet if our builder provides a colour consultant as we still haven't received our final pricing proposal. We are still very early stages but I am discovering that so many things in a house are dependent on others and therfore cause price variances as well. The reason I am thinking colours now is because we have asked them to quote on a Quantum Quartz benchtop / Granite benchtop and depending on what price they come back with will depend on whether we go black or something else. If we can't afford to upgrade to stone / granite benchtop then I think it would change my perspective on what colours we would go with and then it would follow on to many other choices.
We have gone through all the display homes in Harrison and Forde and have to say, we didn't really see much that appealed to us. I was shocked with the bright orange in one of the Forde display homes as my mum and dad only got rid of their bright orange tiles in the kitchen a few years ago! Yes, probably had their selections done by House-To-Be's colour consultant, lol. On a more serious note don't forget all the kitchen sites on the internet (many of them have galleries) plus there are some pretty good photos on this forum and the associated blogs. I am old fashioned I have a right to be as I am planning a kitchen for retirenment (old age) so I a playing it safe.
