Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 22, 2015 11:01 pm Hi everyone finally bit the bullet and signed up to the forum; I'm currently in the planning stage of my new house, and I'm a bit stuck on the kitchen layout. This is what I have so far: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I like the general layout but I'm not sure about the pantry and fridge being on opposite sides of a relatively long kitchen, at least in terms of my little house... Walk in pantry has a cavity slider door, and bench top plus overhead cupboard on the southern wall, where I will keep microwave and toaster, and the rest of the pantry all shelving. I also would like to be able to use the island bench for breakfast/casual meals, is it wide enough considering the sink? Currently 900mm with 300mm overhang. Looking forward to hearing your wisdom, many thanks Jess. Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 2Sep 22, 2015 11:17 pm Hi Jess and welcome to H1. Looking at your kitchen and wondering where you're planning to do your prep? I ask cause with your double sink centred there doesn't seem to be a lot of room on the bench. Are you having a sink in your pantry as well? I wouldn't be so concerned about distance from fridge to pantry and consider widening your bench to 1m or 1.2 if you want a casual eating area. Good luck just my thoughts. It's similar to our current house, and have never really thought it an issue. What I do notice though, is that the fridge is quite close to Bed2. If you're going to have someone sleeping in there, the fridge noise may be a bit intrusive. The wall will tend to direct the sound away to some extent, so may not be too bad. It is almost line-of-sight to Bed 1 though, so that may be something to consider if you sleep with those doors open. It may also be worth making the fridge alcove deeper, as a lot of the larger modern fridges are deeper than 600mm. Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 4Sep 23, 2015 4:42 pm Thanks TraceyWayne. Ack. I hadn't thought about prep... I just saw lots of bench space on the wall, but I won't want to do prep there, especially with the overhead cupboards... Would it be odd to have the kitchen sink off centre to the right? Or I could close the gap between the island and the pantry and have a long u shape instead... Any thoughts? No sink planned for the pantry, no space I think. Thanks for your input oneJohn. I had wondered if the alcove was deep enough... Would you take from the wardrobe/linen press, or rest of the kitchen to make extra depth? I love hearing suggestions from fresh sets of eyes, especially those more knowledgeable than mine. Thanks again! Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 5Sep 23, 2015 6:20 pm I don't think there's an issue having the sink off centre but depends on the sink and with/without drainer and do you want the sink that close to an edge? U shape would work but need to figure out how you're using the space such as do you want access from alfresco or fidge end enough. Try and picture how you'll use the space. Can you visit some display homes to get a better idea? I'm all for practical application of spaces particularly high traffic kitchen areas. Custom build Northern NSW viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72217 Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 6Sep 23, 2015 9:21 pm Hmmm. If I make a u it would definitely be open at the fridge end.. I think that's what I'm leaning towards atm.. Definitely need a draining board on the sink, hmmm, need to keep thinking I think, and find time to get back to some display houses... Thanks again Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 7Sep 24, 2015 4:49 am I would put the WIP where the fridge is if you can. Make the island bench 1.2 metres deep. Or If you sacrifice the WIP you could extend the bench where it currently is. Put your sink there and dishwasher under. Keep the bench clear for prep. Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 9Sep 24, 2015 7:23 pm Yes, two is what I was thinking of but didn't get to explaining (young baby!) The only issue I see here is are you happy to look at a wall when at your sink. A window is nice in that configuration. I still think it's preferable though. A walk in pantry was initially a complete must for me in our design and I didn't want to sacrifice it. When I saw it didn't work as well for our space I went with 2 x 460 wide doors and deep enough to step in. Bench runs through it so I can put appliances etc if I want. The rest of the kitchen I have lots of drawers and I feel this will work well. It might free up some space for you.. Yes you could put the kitchen where the living is, make meals a living area and then put a dining table where the kitchen is. It depends on your orientation though can't see which way is North etc. Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 12Sep 25, 2015 4:33 pm Good ideas all. My 2 cents worth: I have a double sink in my island. The island is 1.2m wide x 3.4m long. The sink is located to one side so there is still ample prep area. The drainer is a removal insert, that can sit in either bowl. If you can make your island longer & wider do it. Try and go at least 1m distance between your island and wall with the cooktop. We were able to go 1.4m between, just allows more than one person to work in the area (was the builders suggestion and so glad I listened) I have a WIP with a sliding door and absolutely love it, it stores so much, including mess . I also have a sink in it and bench space so prep can be done in there also. Our fridge is the opposite side to the WIP and it is not a problem. If anything, family can access the fridge without getting in my way So many options- enjoy the process. Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 13Sep 25, 2015 6:04 pm Thanks everyone Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of no window at the sink, but its a compromise I'm willing to make. I'll put up a pretty picture or something North is up, or at least just a few degrees off, so I'd like to keep definitely the living and preferably the dining on that side. In fact just having a look now if I kept an L shape plus Island on the wall where the living area is I'd actually have a slightly shorter island in order to keep the 1m between benches... Definitely do want to keep the walk in pantry, I've been dreaming of all the jam and pasta sauce and relish and other preserves I can make and store in there... Picture shelves of glass jars and happiness or maybe that's just me... Thanks again guys, I'm meeting a new builder on Tuesday so will run all ideas by him. I'm super excited Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 14Sep 25, 2015 6:31 pm Thought I'd give my two cents... I think extending the bench to the wall alongside pantry looks good and would work well. My concern with the second variation drawing is would it be noisey to have the sinks/dishwasher on bedroom 1 wall.. If you put dish washer on and then go to bed, you'll listen to it through the wall for the next hour... We have our sink off centre to the right of the island bench. It's a Clark Monaco undermount double with no drain tray but you can buy inserts which act as a drain space.. Wanted two sinks but didn't want to lose the extra prep space for a drain area that I wouldn't really use... Good luck with your planning Bridget Re: Stuck on kitchen layout, help please? 16Sep 27, 2015 10:37 pm Thanks Bridget I don't think I could live without my draining board! I'm much too lazy to dry my dishes, I always have a thing or two drip drying! Good point about the dishwasher noise, I will have to be careful where I put it, which ever layout I end up using I might stick with the dishwasher on the island bench.. I like the look of your kitchen You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn. The doors can’t open past 90 degrees and it’s difficult and maybe impossible to remove drawers 2 15573 Hi, We're building a double-storey in Perth and I'm undecided with the kitchen sink situation.
