Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 03, 2015 6:59 pm I really don't like the look of sinks on island benches. Not so much the sink, but everything else that comes with it. Our current galley style kitchen has the sink in front of a window, so the bulk of my bench is clear. I have heaps of stuff always cluttered the around the sink, but it's kinda out of the way.. How do you get around this? We will put a sink in the butlers pantry but it can't be the only one, can it? Is there a way to conceal the mess of dirty/drying dishes? Have to admit I don't like the sink in the middle of the island bench either. I'm having a U shape kitchen, so was able to put the sink under the window and have a BIG open bench space A lot of the kitchen designs for houses that fit my block were galley, with the sink in the middle of the island.. there seemed to be zero bench space! Plenty of room for storing things with the WIP and all, but just no bench space which I always run out of in my current home. Re: No sink on island bench? 6Aug 06, 2015 1:48 am I'm not a fan either, to me a bench is for eating and socialising. It's true it makes it more social when at the sink but I'd rather stack them up and chat then shove them in the dishwasher later! I've got a big L in our build, with the sink, dishwasher and bins on one wall. The sink is under a window (in lieu of splashback). That frees the space on the kitchen side of the bench for plenty of pot drawers directly opposite my cooking and drags on the back wall. It may not be a perfect triangle but was my preferred layout. We then have a 1.2 deep x 3m Island for eating/talking/homework/prep. We are building about 220 sqm floor space plus garage and deck. we found with project homes we had to go huge to get a kitchen of decent size and design. That's partly why we went custom. I wouldn't bother trying to hide it, just do ubdermpubt sink with a board that covers when not in use (stray cups can sit under it though pots won't fit!) and have the dishwasher handy. I think those little walls spoil the clean lines, personally. Re: No sink on island bench? 7Aug 06, 2015 1:46 pm my kitchen island is almost the same size as yours (1m x 3.3m) and i dont like the sink on the island as well.. have a U shape kitchen with servery window and opting for undermount sink.. Re: No sink on island bench? 8Aug 07, 2015 4:43 pm We are doing a similar servery to what CuttingEdge posted, and having a single bowl sink tucked behind, and the main double bowl sink in the butler pantry just inside. Might love to regret it. If you don’t have a dishwasher, the cheaper way to hide dirty dishes is to have a special basin inside the cabinet under your sink so that you can stack them there first if you are unable to clean them straight away. As for the other mess around your sink, it is always best to clean them up after cooking. Re: No sink on island bench? 10Sep 21, 2015 7:24 pm Same dilemma with me. Just about 95% of display homes have sink in bench. They usually don't even have a drainer either. This is not practical as a lot of stuff can't go in a dishwasher. With kids, etc.,we always have mess and dishes. I'm going to try and get my kitchen turned so that it's against the window. Remember sink drainers were designed for laminated bench tops to protect against any damage. Stone doesn't have this issue! You can get a double bowl sink that has a removable drainer, you can also get draining racks with integrated drip trays. I think for the extra bench space you get back and also the look no drainer is the way to go if your having stone! For me it's not the end of the world as I needed to have a sink for the convenience. I will just have a cover when not in use and a removable drainer. Both will be stored under the sink. I have also used space saving pipe work to use the area under the sink better. I get that you can load the dishwasher directly however sometimes you need a sink.
