Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 04, 2015 6:41 am We have currently drawn an island with a sink, and the stove on the main because my husband prefers to have joinery that extends from the main kitchen into the dining (he says it will be a feature and useful for extra storage) and creates a gap in the kitchen for easier exit to the dining table. The joinery could also have space under the bench to create study nooks. My dilemma is this. Whilst I agree with my husband's suggestion, I don't like kitchen islands. I like my sink and stove to be connected so that no water drained from veggies or meat juice spill on the floor. I prefer to wipe the bench rather than mop the floor. Any ideas on what to do? I prefer the sink and stove in their current positions so I can prepare at the sink facing out to the dining and living, and the stove is safely against a wall rather than accessible to children's fingers. My thoughts are maybe a draw out board, board on a hinge, or draw out table with wheels that is level with the island and can be tucked away in the joinery when not in use? Re: Kitchen layout help - bridge to kitchen island? 2Dec 04, 2015 8:49 am You need to put both versions on paper and post them up here for us to look at. There may be other options. I'm not a fan of wheel out joinery or anything like a hinged benchtop etc. They tend to look tacked on in my opinion. Stewie Re: Kitchen layout help - bridge to kitchen island? 5Dec 04, 2015 7:46 pm I actually like it as per your husbands suggestion, however ( and I can say this because I do all the cooking at our place ) whoever does the bulk of the cooking should have the final say in the kitchen layout. I also like islands but as a simple bench and no cooktop or sink on them either. In that photo where would you put the sink if not on the island? It doesn't look like there is much room to put one on the same wall as the cooktop. I could get rid of a cupboard and put the sink on the horizontal wall (or even on the vertical wall, but like Stewie said there isn't much room). But I do like the idea of preparing and facing the dining room and living room. That's why I'm seeking ideas of how to bridge the gap so I get both my husband's layout, and a way to minimise drips on the floor. Re: Kitchen layout help - bridge to kitchen island? 8Dec 05, 2015 1:38 am I also prefer islands to be clear; sinks in particular are mess magnets. Maybe have a u shaped kitchen as you prefer, and a disconnected inbuilt joinery solution for the dining? Thinking about it, even if the kitchen ben h was connected, with the layout of the sink and cook top Youd probably still end up with drips... I might still end up with drips. Maybe it's just something I'll have to get used to. Here is a link to some "bridge" ideas I found on the internet: http://www.houzz.com.au/ideabooks/57640 ... nter-ideas Re: Kitchen layout help - bridge to kitchen island? 11Dec 09, 2015 7:49 am To me they just don't seem like a very professional solution as in my comment above. I must admit also that most of the food prep I do is on the bench right next to the sink so I can't take the moral high road on that one... I did watch a friend recently in their kitchen with the sink a way from the main bench and she washes all the veges etc in the sink then puts them into a large plastic bowl and carries them over to where she prepares them. Maybe a slight change in how you do things ?
