Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 30, 2015 12:56 am What do you consider a good bench height? We are thinking a little higher than usual. My husband is just over 6ft, I'm about 167cm (5'3?) Re: Bench height 3Jul 30, 2015 11:12 am TashPaul I think the standard is about 900mm. You and I are the same height and I wouldn't want a bench any higher than 900, as it could be awkward to work on. We did want a bit higher than standard as it would be hard for husband to work on. Perhaps slightly easier to work on a taller bench than a tall person on a lower one. Re: Bench height 4Jul 30, 2015 7:33 pm I am doing kitchens at 910mm high as standard and have done for 5 years now. I have done them up to 950mm for tall couples. I have done them up to 950mm for tall couples. Yes we might go somewhere in between.. 920 or 930? I don't mind it a little taller. It's good for the island bench seating too (?) Re: Bench height 6Aug 08, 2015 7:29 pm My husband is 6 foot 4 and I am 5 foot 6 (your height). Our benches are 950, it took a while to get used to the added height but I actually find it a good height to work at and I do 95% of the stuff in our kitchen Re: Bench height 7Aug 09, 2015 2:08 am BronReno My husband is 6 foot 4 and I am 5 foot 6 (your height). We've decided to go 950 as well. Yes it's a bit higher but I find when I stand at it to work my arms are actually in quite a neutral position, as good posture when you sit at your desk straight out from the body so I think it will be fine. It will also feel nice to sit at, I think on the island. Re: Bench height 8Aug 11, 2015 7:21 am Also think then about the depth of your sink. My husband is tall and when he washes up the depth of the sink couples with the height of the bench makes for a sore lower back when washing up! Re: Bench height 12Aug 11, 2015 9:44 pm Crazyk Don't forget your ensuite bathroom and laundry! Yeah good point again.. Not sure if there's as much advantage to having ensuite too high but then he does shave there.. We haven't gotten to fine details of those yet need to choose basins and hardware first..he did say the other day basins in current house annoy him (bending down all the time) Re: Bench height 14Aug 12, 2015 9:51 am The average bench height in most homes are 900mm. But since you and your husband are quite tall, I feel that a 950mm bench height should be good for both of you.

But we tried 950 at a home display centre, it seemed comfortable to me to work on so we have decided to go for that. I think the island will feel nice to sit at with that height too. Thanks for your replies. Re: Bench height 16Aug 13, 2015 8:29 am When you decide on a height make sure you take into account the flooring. For example our builder installed the bench tops 920mm above slab height but by the time we lay the tiles it will be more like 900mm. Re: Bench height 17Aug 13, 2015 9:05 am Yes we have hardwood floor so that will be a factor, it should end up just right. Re: Bench height 18Apr 25, 2016 9:41 am I've a question about bench height. For a 900mm bench height should we add on the floor which will be installed second (16mm, I think) and are people referring to a finished height of 900mm in which case we need to take bench top into account also? Thanks Re: Bench height 19Apr 25, 2016 8:44 pm lazandjohn I've a question about bench height. Thanks Everyone is talking finished height!! If your putting your floor down after the kitchen you need to allow extra height on the kickboard. So in your case bench height before the floor needs to be 916mm for a 900mm finished height.
