Firstly, he pointed out that the provision of filtered water (at the sink) was a standard inclusion in our package and hence we would probably use this ahead of the fridge for water. Secondly, that the provision of the tap would add slightly to the depth of/or protrusion from the cavity. And, his final and strongest point, that the ice/water dispensers in these fridges takes up quite a bit of internal space that could be better utilised for normal storage (is this true?). I would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this. Have we been conned? He seemed to have genuine intentions and he was quite happy to do it if I insisted. We've put our tap in the pantry that is next to the fridge cavity. And as we only have a standard depth for the fridge cavity, we do need to be mindful when we go searching for our fridge as to what will look good there or stick out too much and look ridiculous. If you want the tap in the fridge cavity, then keep it in one corner of the cavity and make your cavity larger(width and depth) to accomodate the fridge you really want. Good Luck. Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 4Jul 06, 2008 10:29 pm If you must put the tap in the fridge cavity then put it up higher than the fridge, behind the fridge cabinet. The fridge cabinet is not a full depth cabinet so as to allow for ventilation. And, his final and strongest point, that the ice/water dispensers in these fridges takes up quite a bit of internal space that could be better utilised for normal storage (is this true?). Yes it is true...but it is only a problem if you need that volume. We are not getting one of these fridges for these exact reasons. We are lucky I suppose that we have good tap water and don't feel the need to drink filtered water and when we want cold water we just have a refillable glass bottle in the door of the fridge. And we don't used ice cubes much...at all. With 4 kids we need a largish fridge and have found that we can't find much in a side-by-side that has the volume we are after, and if they have the water and ice despenser then the volume is even smaller. Having said that, if you do use a lot of cold water and ice then this sort of fridge is maybe for you. As far as the volume you will need Choice suggest the following A good rule of thumb is that a family of two needs between 250-285 L of space in a fridge, and you should add 28.5 litres for each additional family member after that. Add freezer space on top of that. So a family of 4 would need about 300 -340 lt of refrigerator space...make sure when you are looking at a fridge that you check the usable volume not just the gross volume. If you do really want this sort of fridge, you can get around the lack of freezer space by having a separate deep freezer if you need to. Either way, Fisher and Paykel have a great fridge, bottom freezer mount, with ice and a water dispenser that has no machine in the door. Which means heaps of fridge space
Check out the link. I LOVE it, but we can't fit it. http://www.fisherpaykel.com.au/refriger ... 76A1B13988 It also won the home beautiful awards. Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 7Jul 07, 2008 9:36 am Depends what your needs are. We have bought two of those Fisher and Paykel ones - one with the dispenser and one without. They will sit side by side in the fridge cavity and yes we will be having a tap outlet in the cavity.
All of DH's family have the fridges with water and ice dispensers so we bought one for our first home. Love love loved it - drank so much water because of it and loved having ice available every minute of the day. Even for parties or family get togethers it was great because you could empty the ice container into an esky and then the fridge would go ahead and make more ready for the gathering. We have a Samsung double door one in this rental but we haven't gotten around to plumbing it in - probably just as well as it will come to the new home with us and sit in the garage - kills me not to be able to drink cold water without remembering to fill bottles and put them into the fridge each night. Lazy I know but we love them - in fact our old one sold as part of our old home because the purchaser also fell in love with it during inspections. We got that exact fridge for our [pantry When we moved in here there was integrated fridges, so we couldnt bring our samsung double fridge , and the pantry space wasnt big enough. enigma_brennan, back to your question, I would not hesitate to get a double side by side, the kids loved the water and ice feature and drank lots just for the novelty. Ours was plumbed from the kitchen sink, as the sink was not on an island bench. In the current house, we got the single door with ice and water for the pantry, but you have to open the freezer to get the ice, and it is not used much by the kids now. It is plumbed from the laundry tap, as the laundry is next door. The amount of room the ice and water uses didnt make a difference for me as the fridge as a whole was bigger than our old single door fridge. Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 10Jul 07, 2008 10:04 am Wow, thanx everyone for all your information and advice. As I was reading the threads I was leaning towards the builder's recommendation until I got to miss81's post and had a look at the F+P, lol, very, very nice
ps thanx 'chelle for the Choice recommendations - very useful! If it is put down low can the pipes still reach it? Someone suggested putting it to the side also...how much depth would a tap add?? Just when I thought I had it all under control My karma ran over your dogma Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 12Jul 08, 2008 10:01 am hehe fantastic topic!!...i unfortunately never even thought abou how much space a tap would take....so i've got the tap provision but didnt specify the location of it....
its too late for me to change anything...starting the build soon....so does anyone who's built with PD know the approx size/depth of the tap? hehehe haywgl do you happen to know? hehe EB, sorry for bumping your post....hope you dont mind Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 13Jul 08, 2008 10:18 am Newbies hehe fantastic topic!!...i unfortunately never even thought abou how much space a tap would take....so i've got the tap provision but didnt specify the location of it.... Similar storey here ... I also asked for the tap provision but never checked how much space it will take; but I did ask them to put it in the corner. My fridge cavity is 1000mm wide by 850mm deep ... am I in trouble with this arrangement?? Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 14Jul 08, 2008 10:26 am Nope I don't know Newbies - but I'm hoping someone else from PD does...maybe I should specify it to be in the corner too, that would take up less space. But maybe impeed on the width... My karma ran over your dogma Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 15Jul 08, 2008 10:33 am Get the tap installed in a cupboard next to the fridge recess along with the filters, and while you’re at it get an isolator for the fridge powerpoint installed somewhere accessible. (Our tap and filters are located at the bottom of our dishes cupboard)
This way you don’t need to move the fridge to change the filters, or to turn it on/off if you wanting to defrost or go on an extended holiday etc etc. Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 16Jul 08, 2008 10:36 am Good thinking Kiwi - I have a WIP and some overhead/underbench cupboards on either side of my fridge, which do you suggest would be the best spot?
Also I know to ask for the powerpoint and the tap to be placed in a cupboard but when you say filters what do you mean by this? Do I ask the builder or is this something I do after I have purchased the fridge? And similar with the pp in the WIP wouldn't I need to leave a hole in the wall for the PP to go through? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 17Jul 08, 2008 10:42 am haywgl Good thinking Kiwi - I have a WIP and some overhead/underbench cupboards on either side of my fridge, which do you suggest would be the best spot? I'd suggest getting the powerpoint isolator installed in the WIP, and the tap and filters installed under the bottom shelf, so they’re out of harms way. The filters come with the fridge for filtering the water. The fridge also indicates when they need replacing. Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 18Jul 08, 2008 10:45 am Good idea thanks Kiwi, I see the builder tomorrow so I will take your suggestions with me.
One more question sorry, if I get the tap placed into the bottom shelf do I need to ask PD to leave a small hole in the cupboard next to the tap provision so i can pull the filters through? I hope I am making sense My karma ran over your dogma Re: Provision of Water Tap in Fridge Cavity 19Jul 08, 2008 11:17 am haywgl Good idea thanks Kiwi, I see the builder tomorrow so I will take your suggestions with me. I hope I am making sense This is an example of an external Fridge filter. This and the tap need to be installed somewhere accessible but not where it'll get knocked about. Some fridges do come with internal filters. I just reread this; the powerpoint still goes behind the fridge, you can get an isolator installed to control the powerpoint from convenient location. This is not a necessity but a nice to have.
