Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 05, 2008 7:47 pm I'll be building a pair of duplexes in the near future.
Kitchen layout has been a big problem. Finally, cut down to two options and would like to hear opinions from others about which they would choose (see attached). We did not want the sink on the breakfast bar, and as we use frying pan and wok a lot, there needs to be some room next to the gas cooker (for pan handles, etc). So, it is option A or option B for you? Chris Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Which option? 4Jul 05, 2008 8:01 pm Ohhh as soon as the pic opened option A jumped at me!!!
I love that setup! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Which option? 7Jul 05, 2008 10:01 pm I'm going to be the voice of dissent here. I prefer Option B. I find that islands in the kitchen create more traffic and then I end up with people in my way. Option B also has more usable bench space.
Judie Re: Which option? 8Jul 05, 2008 10:04 pm Yes, I like Option B better as well - my mum's house has this exact same layout and I love sitting in the little corner in front of the sink and overseeing everything happening on the other side!
But agree that Option A is more modern and sophisticated as Jo said. Re: Which option? 9Jul 05, 2008 10:26 pm Well DH was walking past and he said option B definitely, thinks that A looks too busy. I suppose people sitting at the island bench could get in the way of traffic flow through to the Family room???
I don't really mind either option. I did read somewhere that the island bench style (option A) does work well if you tend to have several people working together in a kitchen. Can't remember where I read that, ask me again in September after I have done my Adult ed course on kitchen design. i think it may be because of that wall on the right hand side, option b just seems to flow better Re: Which option? 12Jul 06, 2008 11:11 am I'm all for version b. I know version a is all the rage but I hate the idea of people in the kitchen when I'm working and being a smallish kitchen it doesn't have enough room to be a walk through area. I'd also be worried about anything that puts a stove close to a window. I think there is ever so slightly more bench space with B and if the duplex's are rented to people with kids. Kids loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee to run through places and play chasey. having option A makes this a definate chasey delight for littlies.
Have you considered switching the pantry position with the oven? making for a corner pantry cupboard? Maybe some sort of hinge arrangement on the corner door. cabinet makers will till you piano hinge doors don't last but they can. Ours was still going strong after 19 years when we sold the last house. I haven't drawn in the pantry sizing, just left that for you to look at. http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll167/kexkez/kitchenoptions1.jpg Re: Which option? 15Jul 06, 2008 1:41 pm kexkez,
Option C has already been considered and rejected. Problem is that when we're cooking with option C, we'll feel very closed in (both sides has vertical walls very very close to the cooker). My DW likes option B, and I'm ...... worried that option B pantry is only 400mm wide. Chris Re: Which option? 16Jul 06, 2008 2:02 pm We had this set up in our last house. With a brick wall between our fridge and our pantry space in our last house. (traditional upright stove) My plan if we'd stayed was to remodel the kitchen and replace the upright stove with a stove top and under bench oven . At the time of building the house the only under bench ovens were electric or mega expensive and I'd wanted a gas oven oh and replacing the facebrick feature in the cooking area with plaster and tiling or glass splash back. Yes you might feel it's a little cosy but it actually wasn't too bad and with todays modern benchtop stoves it would be more open than what we had. I'm assuming you aren't planning to live in both. I seriously doubt having it this way will stop people renting your duplex and it would make for a safer kitchen re: stove near window.

Though I still would love to have those concealed cupboard handles again we aren't having them. Re: Which option? 17Jul 07, 2008 8:29 am Your kitchen KK reminds me of my friend's kitchen exactly the same colour scheme apricot and jarrah everywhere, the same light fitting. With this layout of the stove, where are you supposed to put hpt pots and pans when you have finished cooking? You need to walk through the whole kitchen.
Now back to the question, you do not need a big pantry, Chris, I agree with your wife, 40cm is not wide enough, how about you go for a set of wide underbench drawers instead? this is what I am having, my age and planning to live like my parents to a ripe old age of 95 dictates our plan but I think it is functional for all ages, both young and old. Yhis is our old kitchen that is coming out real soon, and no patry in the old but I will have one set of drawers set as a pantry. Hot pots and pans went on the sink ( it was a double sink with double drainers or on heat pads on the bench across from the stove. even when i was trapped sitting i could sit midway between the stove and the bench top and just reach both. in my new kitchen we are having a similar arrangement but with a 700 mm side section of bench next to the stove top.
