Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 24, 2015 5:00 pm Hi everyone, I have just spent hours looking at the absolutely beautiful kitchens on the other thread and wished I had found this site before I made my colour choices for my new kitchen. I am renovating a galley style kitchen and laundry to allow for wheelchair access to the back verandah. So as part of this I have rethought the kitchen design and thought I would add a bank of cupboards above the cooktop and sink. Now I know that the cupboard height has to be at least 600mm above an electric cooktop and above 700 for a gas one. So I am wondering if they would get in the way of anyone working at the sink. Won't bother me because I am a shortie, but I would like to hear other people's thoughts or experiences. The cabinet maker said he thought if they are there they should only be 200ml deep, but then they will step back from the 300mm range hood cabinet. There will already be a step on that side as the laundry cabinet has to be 700mm deep to fit the appliances in it so I am just not sure how all these depth changes will look. I have seen quite a few photos of cupboards above cooktops but not as many over sinks so I am starting to dither a bit. Any thoughts?? Re: Cupboards above kitchen sink 2May 24, 2015 5:12 pm Using my laundry as an example. The overheads above the sink are 340mm deep and 700mm above the bench. I'm 170cm tall and if I lean forward over the sink I don't hit my head. 200mm shouldn't be an issue but you won't fit much in them? Maybe 2 glasses deep? The different depths etc I don't think you will notice once it's all done. My kitchen is the same...lots of different cupboard and bench depths but nothing that makes you look at it and go Omg that doesn't look right. Re: Cupboards above kitchen sink 3May 24, 2015 7:18 pm Thanks- good to know you don't have any problem with overheads at that height. I was thinking that 200ml was too narrow- almost no point having them I would have thought. Photos I have seen seem to have 300ml cabinets above cooktops and I don't think you lean in any more over a sink than you do over a cooktop. I will see what the builder comes back with. Re: Cupboards above kitchen sink 4May 25, 2015 8:00 am Noooo, don't do it!!! Overheads above a laundry sink are fine as most people don't spend much time at the sink, BUT a kitchen sink is totally different. You stand a kitchen sink for a good bit of time each day. Having a cabinet above is very annoying. I've just moved out of a house where a kitchen Reno put cupboards to the left and right of the sink. Can't tell you how many times I've hit my head on the corner of one of the cabinets. Re: Cupboards above kitchen sink 8May 26, 2015 2:30 pm castobel Would it look silly if I left a space over the sink? I couldn't tell you. It really comes down to your kitchen layout. Every kitchen is different. There is no right answer without seeing your layout.
