Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Kitchen Design - Help me out??? 2May 17, 2015 3:39 pm Hi Dawn. As you say it isn't a massive kitchen but in proportion to the rest of the house it's probably about right. To make it bigger you will need to lose space out of your dining room. The first thing I'd recommend is to extend the overhang on the long bench to 300mm. Currently it's 200 which is a bit small for a functioning breakfast bar, if that is something you wanted. I'd change the cupboards next to the cutlery drawers to drawers and I'd make them 3 drawers instead of 2 (change the next set to 3 as well) have one smaller drawer 200mm and 2 larger drawers 260mm. I'd install a lemans unit in the blind corner next to the dishwasher to make best use of it. The rest can pretty much stay as is. That would make best use of what you have without adding to much cost or taking space out of the dining room. Those are some good ideas. I was just thinking I should make those cupboards in the island drawers instead, but the measurements help! Just wondering if the order of things in the island are good, should the cutlery drawers be at the other end..? What is a lemans? Re: Kitchen Design - Help me out??? 4May 17, 2015 4:46 pm This is a lemans: https://youtu.be/lLEko9A86EE One issue I can see is that with the dishwasher open it will limit access to the cupboards or drawers next to it. it may be better to move the cutlery drawers right down next to the blind corner cupboard. That way you can still access the 2 larger drawers banks with the dishwasher open and the top cutlery drawers could still open even with the dishwasher open. I like the cutlery drawers close to the dishwasher however if you put them further down that end you have to walk right into the kitchen to get cutlery for the table. Most kitchens are a compromise in some way. It's just a matter of working out what's important to you and working around that. The only difference we had was our oven was where your kitchen sink is and our kitchen sink was facing into the dining so I coukf chat and do the dishes.......come to think of it I think our first kitchen was much smaller than yours viewtopic.php?t=62083 Re: Kitchen Design - Help me out??? 8May 19, 2015 2:34 pm In that layout I would make the distance between the bar and the fridge 2m and lose some dining space. It will still flow nice and it will make the whole place seem even more open. You also have a chance of fitting more than one person in the kitchen at the same time:) Re: Kitchen Design - Help me out??? 9May 19, 2015 5:54 pm Thanks! That's a good point. If I want 2 people in there I probably need more room. I'm not too worried about eating up the dining space, as I personally won't use it, but for resale I need a dining room. I'm going to a display home on the weekend to measure out the kitchen, to get an idea of how much space I need. Re: Kitchen Design - Help me out??? 10May 21, 2015 5:50 pm So my builder sent me a follow up email. For some reason the plan shows glass splashback instead of tiles, which they will charge me $1,400 more for. So that's coming out, happy with tiles thanks XD I can't decide on the 600mm or 900mm cooker, more googling required!! Will cost me the same either way.. Also should the powerpoints be shown on this plan, or will they be on a separate plan? So changes I'm going to ask for: Extend the peninsula bench top from 800wide to 900 wide Add a cupboard on the backside of the peninsula 600mm wide by 300mm deep, which will be in the corner for extra storage Potentially add another cupboard between dishwasher and the long arm of the bench to take the space inside the kitchen from 1.2 to 1.5-1.8, will check with a display home how big I want this to be Change the double cupboard in the peninsula into 3 drawers Re: Kitchen Design - Help me out??? 11May 21, 2015 10:16 pm Hi Dawn. You won't be able to fit a 900 upright into your kitchen. The bench is only 1080 long so you'll struggle to fit the 900 and maintain the required distance from the side of you pantry. If your happy losing space out of you dining area then I'd definitely make the sink area wider. As it is currently your sink is pushed over to the corner to much putting the sink and oven very close. That's to be able to fit the second sink bowl in next to the dishwasher. If you make the sink cupboard bigger you can move the sink more central to the window and free up some space in that corner. You will need that so you can effectively use the cooker. That looks much more workable. If you were my client I'd still be recommending a lemans in the blind corner cabinet. Corners are the biggest waste of space in a kitchen if not treated right. They aren't cheap though so whether that cost is worth it is a decision only you can make. The one last thing I'd recommend is making your overheads higher. I'd go for around 800 or 900 high with 3 shelves. I know the top shelf is fairly high but its ideal for those seldom used wine glasses or other items. That would also make your fridge cabinet more usable particularly with the 2 shelves and make sure its inline with the front of the pantry. As its drawn its back inline with the other overheads. As it is you have a massive bulkhead so slightly higher o/h will give you a more proportional look. Otherwise you've made some very practical and useful changes that you will reap a great benefit from over time. Well done. Would rather add an extra $1,000 now to have it perfect, then have to remodel the whole thing in a year I'll extend the overhead cupboards too, I thought they were oddly shallow given how high the roof is! And thanks, most of the ideas came from you So I appreciate the help, when I first saw the plans I nearly just burst into tears as I hated it, but I can see how it will work now and I'm much happier. Oh, and the lemans I thought I could put them in later? How much do they cost usually? Re: Kitchen Design - Help me out??? 15May 24, 2015 7:23 pm The lemans aren't cheap, they're around $800+ but considering how much more usable they make a corner cupboard I think it's worth it. Particularly in smaller kitchens where you have to maximise your space. If you want to install it later just make sure you have an adjustable shelf in that cupboard not fixed. The lemans comes in 3 sizes, 450,500 and 600. It refers to the door size they open through. The bigger the door the larger the shelf size is. Just make sure the minimum size is 450 and you'll be sure of being able to fit one later. Might even be worth mentioning to the cabinet maker that you are going to install one later as it may have a bearing on how they construct and hinge it. About to email this to my builder with all the details, I will be more specific in my email to them (i.e. it WILL be 900mm overhead, but want to show what I'm willing to accept as well). Also, thank gawd I re-read your post while fixing the overhead cupboards. I didn't understand your comment about being inline with the pantry the first time, but now I do! If I had of missed that it would have driven me crazy forever! Re: Kitchen Design - Help me out??? 18May 26, 2015 7:34 pm Looks good Dawn. That all works nicely now. It's amazing how a few minor tweaks can make such a huge difference. I was really unhappy when I first saw the kitchen, but now I'm quite excited and I like the feeling that I've personalised it just for me! Even simple things like extending the overheads has added so much space! I've only cut into the dining room about 40cm, but I've gained so much space and functionality, over my original plan to change into an island and extend about 1.5m into the dining room. Thanks so much for your help! Our Bondi Greenwall was impressive from day one with advanced lush plants to provide a wow factor to this recently renovated living area.
